Agreed Jeremy. Plus I wonder does a chassis with a Carbon Fiber roof have to go through separate crash test certification than the standard tin top iteration? If so, that has to cost some serious coin. If this will be a low volume car the cost / volume justificatoin for a carbon room and potential crash testing may not be economically viable.

That's a good question. I would assume that if the structural material changes, the car would have to be retested, and you're right, that's another significant cost.

I could be 100% wrong, but i thought BMW doesn't need to crash test state side. I'm not sure what their regulations over there demand though.

I don't think anyone can sell a car here without putting it through crash testing, unless something's changed and they're accepting the Euro tests as sufficient, but that hasn't been the case in the past.

I think they do have to crash test, but just different body styles (and bumper styles).

I don't think the US does any roof crash testing. Otherwise the E92 M3 should have gone through 2 certifications (steel roof w. moonroof + CF roof).

I am ready to bet an M3, that the M1 will get CF roof.

Now I'm interested if this is consistent with everyone else's purchases...

My sticker from the dealer on the lower right is supposed to show government crash safety ratings. Mine said "not rated"

So your car is still in 1 piece - that's good.

One complete fast piece, yes.

I have no lack of confidence in the safety of this vehicle, but the facts seem to suggest they don't have to do U.S. ratings for whatever reason.

The carbon fiber roof should at least be an option, like recaro seats.
