I'm reviving this post because I find this damn HVAC system to be ridiculous.

I understand that my HVAC is working as it should which is difficult for me to admit, however, is there a way to hack this thing? I want hot air damn it! If the car can give me hotter air, and warm my hands and the car up faster, that's what I want. Any ideas? Is there a thermostat I can replace?

Is setting the temperature to 84 or higher with the a/c off a reasonable solution? Above that temp that it blows hot air both below and through the front vents. I think thats what this thread has concluded? It may at times be hotter than you want but it does the job.

I definitely have something wrong then. I've been in two other 128i's and both had great heat, while mine is awful. Thinking it's a clogged heater core since the PO had non-BMW coolant in it.
Might be able to clean it out with citric acid or CLR.

I ran water through the heater hoses, alternating back and forth (took like 2 hrs to unblock it) and sand looking stuff came out. Heat works fine now!

I'm new to this forum. I have the exact same problem. can you confirm that the center two vents only blow cold air unless the temp is cranked to the maximum of 84?

I had the problem last winter and it was caused by low battery voltage. Went for a really long drive and it fixed.

I don't think I've ever turned on my heater... no need I guess.

I used to take late night/early morning drives in my 1er. In the winter the temps here could dip in to the 30s, and I would drive with the windows down and the heat on. The combination of the cold air from the outside and the warm air from the heater felt good, plus with the windows down I could hear the sweet sound of the Performance exhaust better.

I read once that BMW was sued somewhere (California?) because some doofus fell asleep at the wheel and blamed it on vents blowing hot air on his face.

Just a thought.
