My E46 speedo is on the high side. I would probably believe GPS more. My car registers 60 on the speedo, but the radar things always show 57 mph. Glad you made that point. The speedos can be off by 3 mph at 60, probably 5mph at full speed IMHO.

The speed limiter works in all gears. I think this is a falicy. People said the same thing for the 135i and even the M3. Its just that most people do not get the chance to drive THAT fast in the states or even while on ED over here. Even most Germans do not drive that fast! lol I seriously doubt that the 1M will go faster than a real 260 kph without having its V-max speed limiter removed. That would be in sith gear too. BMW has said it is set to 250 kph. And unlike previous M models no higher speed limiter will be available. Even on a 135i with sport package ((which included "#840 speed syncronation" option which is BMW speak for a higher speed limiter from the standard 135is 210 kph limiter) a 135i will only do a real 240 kph top speed. With the V-max chip from any tuner over here... 285 or 290 kph is possible. I personally have only seen 280 kph on my tuned 135i. Some the M3 guys said their car could do 280kph or 173 mph.... but then I pointed out to them that the speedo WILL read 4% (or more) higher than true velhicle speed. ALL M cars will ony do 250 kph. IF you go thru a M driving school over here... you get a special certificate and race licsence - with this you can go to your BMW Zentrum and PAY for the 280 kph (real kph) speed limiter to be coded into the ECU. Or pay some chip tuner over here a few thousand euros for the V-max to be open. On an M3 that gets you right around 300 kph (real) v-max. |

I did a dynorun last weekend and they found out that the car is not limited at 250 km/h but at 259 km/h, that's why it was probably not hiting the limiter at 270 km/h on tacho.

FYI guys... in German tacho means speedometer. So... if the 1M is limited to 259 kph (true vehicle speed) that that would mean about 272 kph on the speedo/tacho gauge. (IF you figure the speedo reads high by 4 or 5% plus). Dackel |

Hit my rev limiter in 6th once so far. Speedo read 270+, I didn't have time to really look at it, I was concentrating on the traffic. But the little beast didn't really have any "punch" above 250. At least comparing it to the M3, that is. That just kept going with unimpressed ease until the speedo went past the 300 mark. But to me it's not important. Autobahn isn't the fun part in the 1M and it's certainly not its strong-point. Btw, we already had a test "white against black"... I hate to say: the white one had more grunt!

Going from memory I think it was 272 speedo to 256 GPS or 6% error and that changed with speed. At around 100 km/h it was only 3-4% and that being said when I finally get my car redelivered I am going to check if the odometer is off as well.

tunnel vision just starts to set in at that speed, espically if you can maintain it and not run out of room. I like high speed

Given the running in instructions refer to 160mph, the limit being a real 259 km/h sounds exactly right to me.
