Squealing brakes, have CPO Ext. Maintenance but dealer refuses to replace
So my 135i's brakes have been squealing very badly, loudly and obnoxiously since the day I bought the car well over 4 months ago. The squealing is ear piercing at low speed like slowing down for speedbumps and quite embarrassing. Well my car is still under CPO and has the CPO Extended Maintenance Coverage which I was told would cover brakes. So I called a local dealer and they said that they can only replace the brakes when the car says its time and refuse to do so earlier I'm not sure when the car is going to say its time but its been very bad and I need them replaced. Sure, I can buy pads and replace them myself but I overpaid for my car because of the CPO and Extended Maintenance so I don't have to spend time and money to deal with these issues. So fellow 1addicts what can I do?

Try burning them in. Find a place where you can *safely* get her up to 60 and then stop HARD (right on the edge of a skid). Do that 10 times. Then drive long enough to allow things to cool down. I'll bet that changes what you experience.

Mine are squeezing like a couple of pigs every time I apply the brakes lightly to come to a stop. It is annoying as heck. I am going to bed the brakes as mentioned in the above post and will report back with results.

Do exactly that. I'm sure it'll help a lot. At least for a few thousand miles. Always does the trick for me!

I drove an E28 in the late 80s. Man on man, I loved that car. And for whatever reason, she needed this every few months. Rather than look for a better solution, I chose to do this for fun

do the bedding process, u win either way. if the bedding wins yay it stopped squealing, if it doesn't work yay you burned thru ur brakes now ur dealer will replace them!

I bet it has aftermarket Hawk pads. IDK though. If the bedding process doesn't help, they may be Hawks. My HP+ pads make noise all the time, but if brake squeel is acceptable on a Porsche, it's ok with me.

I would try a different dealer. One that is more concerned with customer satisfaction than your current dealer.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I'm going to try mr.fabulous's bedding method and post back, sounds like its going to do the trick! I too had been wondering if the car had aftermarket pads since I know high performance pads tend to squeal, but dismissed it assuming the PO would get the pads replaced at BMW because of the Extended Maintenance coverage. Ill find out soon enough.

Im in the same boat
Bought a 2009 135i with only 22k kms on it. It wasnt until about 3 days of driving that the squealing started at low speeds....badly..
Took it back to the dealer and their only solution was to have the brakes replaced, even though they were barely broken in. Long story short, took it to a few other places and they mentioned the squealing cant be fixed but it would help to do the burn in (high speed, brake hard, repeat). It worked, for a while but depending on your driving it will come back. For me its an indication that the brake rotors/pad design used in the 1 series is flawed. I have had 3 BMW previous to my 135i and have never had an issue with squealing. I'm looking for alternative brakes/pads to install that would eliminate this nuisance. If anyone has done this, please let me know the brand. |

A lot of people are under this impression that dealerships don't like replacing things under warranty. This is not the case. As a dealership technician, we get paid to replace parts. Nine times out of ten, we're on you're side. However, if the pads/rotors arn't below a specific spec, all we can do is apply grease and chaff the pads. Repeat visits will always help things in your favour though. Typically, repeat visits get priority and a shop foreman will look at it.

I have a friend having the same problem with his transmission. Transmission is behaving oddly and shits are very rough, but dealership cannot change it because it is still within specs. they told him to drive it for a month or 2 , if he is still having the problem they will eventually change it. This would be his 3rd visit.

I had the same problem when I had my 135i. Paid the dealer $150.00 to fix the problem but it returned 3 weeks later. Took it back and they said it was the sensor. I traded the car when the dealer blew up the engine during a walnut blasting. The new owner got a brand new engine and a badly squeaking RF brake.

Brake noises are NOT covered under CPO. This is stated clearly in the CPO agreement, there's no reason to be upset.
The only way to fix this would be to chamfer the pads and clean all the brake dust. Could be the sensor as well, but it's typically the buildup of pad material vibrating when braking. You bought a car with high performance Brembo brakes, this is the trade-off. I deal with it. |

I would definitely have him go back to the dealership. Transmission issues are bad enough, but intestinal distress should definitely be covered under warranty.

Also, I had my last 135 (a 2012) for three years and the only brake squealing I ever got was when there was a patina of rust after rain. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe you guys just got unlucky.
Here's to hoping my new 135 holds up with as few (zero) maintenance issues as my old one.

I track my dual duty 2011 135. Bought it used in June 2013 with 48,000 Kms, now at 70,000Kms. I visit the track (lapping and HPDE) as often as once a week from April until October. I went through 5 sets of brake pads ranging from agressive street to race coupound. Im still on stock rotors which have developped surface cracks. My front caliper paint has changed to a golden grey, and the white BMW logo has turned yellow, due to heat. Not a hint of vibration from my rotors and no squealing from my current pads.
The only squealing I got was with carbotech XP10 and project mu club racer pads, after the pad layer on the rotors from proper use at the track, would wear off during street use (cold track pads are more abrasive). Squealing is to expected with 95% of track pads that are used often on the street. You may get away with no noise if your car is a week-end toy and is used more for track than street duty. For those of you that are curious and still reading my post , the ultimate dual duty pads which Ive settled on are the Performance Friction PFC 08's for the 135i. No noise hot or cold, track or street, in winter or summer. Long lasting pads too ... The Hardbrakes.com Ti 0.5mm heat shields may also help with the vibration, as they act as another shim, and keep more heat in the brake pads, and less is transferred to your caliper pistons and brake fluid ... I also use apply a very thin layer of high heat copper grease on all contact points, every time Im working on my calipers (change of pads, inspection of my brake pistons and dust boots, etc). See my latest brake cooling mods here ---> http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=57 ... AND here ---> http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...0&postcount=61
