Value of PTS/Individual Paint?

Thought this would be an interesting topic. I am pretty familiar over in the Porsche world where PTS has become the must have and unicorn for all the GT cars. I feel like the interest has skyrocketed the last 5 years or so, and PTS cars are highly regarded and seem to sell with premiums when the time comes. Do you guys see or feel the same way with Individual Paint? I know some of the classic and unique colors I am sure are more desirable if and when the time to sell arises? Thoughts?

If you're asking if any modern bmw has the staying and resale value of a Porsche GT car then no. All PTS does for those cars is maintain exclusivity and in those rarified circles that can afford them what's another $10k to make your car more unique and maybe making an already rare and desirable car more so. Since Bmw is not rare or exclusive the individual process provides no real world value beyond being cool if you want to do it. YMMV.

I'm sure that to the right person, a certain color might be worth more, but you'll need to find that guy. The one who has to have Avus blue, for example, and maybe, if you can find that guy, he might pay more.

As for trading into a dealership, I wouldn't expect much of any more value for having an individual paint. Even with my Hera Mica being 1 of 2, I don't think it effects value much.

To add a little more background, I was also the kid that had a Dakar Yellow M3 on my wall when I was 12. I ended up owning a 95 in Dakar when I got older, so I definitely appreciate the history and love seeing the old colors, or new colors from other manufactures on the new models. I guess my thought and what some of you might have said is that to the enthusiasts out there, I can see the PTS cars being more desirable, maybe not worth more.

Nah. Not even the special editions seem to get any love on the forums. We all know they're just money grabs. Dat Velocity Edition tho...

I'd pay more for a rare/individual color, sure. Rarity means something to me, although to be honest, not that much. PTS Porsche GT's have asking prices in the multiple tens of thousands over non-PTS. Although to be fair, the option cost from Porsche was $6-12k depending on the year

The allure of PTS for Porsche is the exclusivity since allocations are limited. Over half the PTS Porsches are either Mexico or Miami Blue anyway.

I couldn't care less though because all my cars are white, preferably non-metallic, which is often at no/low cost for any car. Chalk will be the first time I deviate from that on the GT2RS which I hope I don't regret...

1M. Beats almost any Porsche GT in terms of resale (appreciation no depreciation) besides the 911R. Offered in 3 colors only.

To the main point I don't think individual paint had any value on BMWs—-except to the guy who paid $5k or whatever to have it done at the time of order.

It definitely adds value on Porsches, at least for the desirable colors.

If color X was so desirable more than 1 or 2 people would have picked it.

I love Plum Crazy Purple, but it's a low production color b/c most people do NOT want it.

Yeah, more people would get it, but as it is PTS, Porsche controls the narrative of how many they're willing to allocate for that model and/or production year.

I just bought a 2011.75 E92 M3 ZCP with 35k miles for $35k. I would have GLADLY paid $40k for that car if it was Dakar Yellow or Fire Orange.

Are you completely oblivious to the price of any 993 variant?

ITs all personal preference. To me, finding Interlagos Blue was a must, but for the right car I would have sacrificed to space grey. And, Id pay more for Santorini or Monte Carlo for sure. Individual is quite clear. Its based on the individual. Some people wont pay more while me and several others, will.

i do agree that the Porsche PTS obsession has gotten out of control. the best are the people who insist on painting their car "1 of 1" without stopping to think why no one else has ever picked that fucking color.

and then you get the IG enablers who go "look at this GT3 RS painted donkey taint-brown. this is the only one in the galaxy! congratulations to the lucky owner"

PTS has a very different audience both short and long term IMO. Someone fell in love with my Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo recently to the point he's very very close to making it worth my while to order another. Only thing is I would only do it with PTS and those allocations are practically impossible to obtain, not to mention it's pushed the MSRP up to a poison pill level near $210k if it can even be done.

With BMW Individual Manufaktur, Audi Exclusive, and MB Designo, it's much later before any premium takes effect as far as resale (2-4 generations).

You might want to at least make the inquiry. My long term sales guy has never been able to get me a PTS allocation for the GT cars (which is where all the PTS hype is focused) but he said non-GT's are easier to get. So I asked for PTS on my wife's upcoming Macan order and it was approved immediately.

Not sure about the Sport Turismos because they're very new and I don't know what numbers they are being produced in, but...it's worth a phone call I think.
