I tend to agree with you, in fact its almost irrational, but aren't we all kinda irrational when it comes to cars
Yes we definitely are... However, irrational in a controlled manner... Like switching cars every year or two to something completely different I don't mind wasting money on... I don't mind wasting money on mods... Just not s to gts kinda switch or m235i to m2...

Yesterday, i drove the M2 and 235i back-to-back around Sydney Motorsport Park on a BMW drive day. The difference in the characteristics of a 235 vs M2 was night and day... relatively, the main differences i noticed was how spongy the brakes of the 235i were compared to the M2, and the sedateness of the exhaust vs the pops and crackles coming from the M2. They were paced laps so I didn't get to fully compare handling and power characteristics but I could tell how much of a track weapon the M2 was vs the 235i... if you are planning on doing track days it's a no brainer to get the M2 over modding a 235i. For resale purposes, spending $ on upgrades is going to cost you on resale as those $ will probably mean little to the next purchaser. The M2 is a much better performance package out of the box and will hold it's value.

Having said, i'd still keep my E82 135i with JB4 tune as you wouldn't notice much difference driving them on the street and the $90K+ is not enough to justify an upgrade from the ~$30K my car is worth now.

However, the cars we're discussing like m235i to m2 or s3 to rs3 or 435 to m4 generally, people in this price range, have money but not throw them away money... Maybe I'm wrong... Maybe it's only me as well who thinks it's weird making a jump like that...

My thinking is more that people make those jumps is either they rushed into the decision of buying the wrong car to begin with... When 435 came out, M4 was already rumoured to be announced a year down the line... So is it a mistake or impatient a person bought the 435 and regretted it... Therefore, switching to M4? Or something else.

There are a lot of people playing the "car game", I'm one of them, I lose money switching cars all the time, but never jumping within the same manufacturer, same series and same class. Eg. I'd find it ok to switch from m235i to a s3 sedan or rs3... Because in my heart and mind it's a completely different car. Lol I'm ranting
I disagree

I was looking at buying a 996 GT3 prior to the 1M, and could have bought it at a stretch. A GT3 RS is way out of budget, and couldn't afford one without re-mortgaging the house.

The price difference between a 991 GT3 and 991 GT3 RS is quite large too, so they're not necessarily the same buyer.

I'd go from a M235i to an M2 without hesitation. You're paying for the chassis, not the motor. That's what makes these cars special. Anything can be quick in a straight line. You'd be better off with an RS3 if that was your priority.

I wish I had bought a 996 GT3 when I was looking at them around $90k. They seem to have jumped to $150k+ in the last 18 months.

Same here

I saw a few at around the 90-95k mark early last year, but couldn't move my race car in time. Should have scrounged and bought it...the beauty of hindsight I suppose.

Add me to the gt3 boat. Was so close to a 996 mark II. Then the bloke decided to trade it, and his 997 gt3, on a 991 gt3. Sad face.

I'm with den525 here. Life is too short to move from similar in-generation cars such as a F22 to F87 unless exceptionally special.

Don't know where you got your info from, but mine is the immaculate yellow 996.2 pictured above. It's a 2004 Australian delivered car and it definitely was ordered from the factory with PCCB (likewise my grey 997.2 above) and one piece lightweight seats.

Oh dear...I guess that's the beauty of hindsight though!

I was speaking to a mate who sold is 3.2 CS a while back for big money. His mate sold one for a LOT less 2 years ago. I guess lots of people have won out and others lost out in this wild Porka frenzy going on at the moment.
