Interesting Conversation @ Discount Tire

I went to one of the local discount tire shop to get a balancing and tire rotation. During my check in, I mentioned that I've spacers in the front and guy stopped the check in and said that they can not work on the car. Discount tire doesn't work on cars with spacers.

And then he added that, spacers are not safe because all the weight of the car is resting on the lug nuts rather than the center hub. and added that it is one of most common reasons where the wheel will come off the car.

Well... I wanted to ask the fellow 1er community.. Below at my signature you can see what kinda tires and wheels I have.

What do you guys think of this?

Thats why you get quality hubcentric spacers from companies like Macht Schnell and Velocity Motorcars.

We have been beating on ours all year long on our race car.

It depends on the spacer. The 135i only has about 7mm of hub extension. So, if you have 5mm spacers on front then they are resting on only 2 mm of hub.
If you have a larger spacer that is piloted then it's not always the case. The real key is what spacer does a person have, and how is it made.

This is yet another reason to go with a German made product that carries a TUV certificate approval. TUV test these parts nine ways to Sunday. IF the part is not up to snuff, it won't get their approval. This is also why things/parts cost more over here.

OP,

Most, if not all chain Wheel/Tire shops will give you the same talk. They will not work on any cars that have any kind of spacer for liability reasons.

There are probably hundreds of people on this forum alone who run high quality spacers on and off the track without an issue. As long as a reputable company is used as well as the proper length lug bolts and installation, you should not incur of any kind of issues of wheel vibration or a wheel coming off.

well my friend purchased these spacers, I got them from him.. I shall check the brands!!

I've been thinking and realized that I didn't really undertstand. can you guys explain how the -quality- of the spacer effects the weight on lug nuts, or tire not resting properly and etc etc? 1 more time? please?

only part I understood was Gill's explanation " The 135i only has about 7mm of hub extension. So, if you have 5mm spacers on front then they are resting on only 2 mm of hub. "

I have 5mm spacers on the rear wheels only (to fit 275 tires in the back without rubbing on the inside of the wheel). Any thoughts on running a 5mm spacer in the rear (the shop that installed them did replace the lug nuts with shallower depth)?

I think you have to look at it in the most simplest way. You don't want to use just a spacer per se. It would act like a BIG washer bewteen the wheel and hub.

What you want is a machined form that is a spacer but also has a lip to conform to the hub - to provide a ridge so the wheel hub mates perfectly to the car's hub. You also want high strength wheel bolts (LONGER ones) to keep everything together.

UPDATE:

I found the receipt and it says it is purchased from BR Racing.

Vorshlag Motorsports parts - 5mm spacers (set of 2), hubcentric.
Vorshlag Motorsports parts - Ext Length Lug bolts.

I'm kinda confused that Gill said 135 has 7mm.. these spacers that my friend purchased(for his 135) is already 8mm.

So what's now?

Spacers come in all sizes... the fact that you have "hub-centric" spacers is a good thing. They are what everyone is talking about with regards to getting some "good ones" from Macht Scnnell, etc.

Gill is talking about the "lip" that is currently on the OEM BMW hub.... not about the actual physical width of the spacers you have.

Can you take your spacers off before you go to the shop...

put them back on after??

If not, I'd find a speed shop of some kind that works on race cars in the area. They won't have any issues working on a car with hub-centric spacers on it.
