Ticking noise

Over the past week, a couple times I started up the car and started driving, I hear this ticking type noise. I think it's coming from the engine or at least from the front of the car around the engine bay area. Going to bring it to the dealer to get it checked out but I was wondering if anyone has a theory on what could be causing it.

(Disclaimer: I hate vertical videos but had to take this video quickly while stopped at a stop light)

You can hear the sound from inside the car. It's not really loud from within the cabin so you might have to turn up the volume a little bit. I don't see any engine lights or anything. I don't have a code reader unfortunately, so couldn't pull codes.

I've read about the lifter noises and I'm thinking maybe it might be that. It doesn't happen all the time I start the car and usually the sound disappears (or lowers in volume) after driving for a few miles. I have a 2013 car though and from what information I can find, it seems like it only affected N52 cars model year 2009 and older.

My car has the ticking noise, and this sounds nothing like it. For me, it's more of a steady tick, whereas yours is intermittent and sounds deeper, like driving over expansion joints on an interstate. I can barely hear mine from inside the car with the windows down, parked. It's a progressive problem, and shouldn't surprise you out of the blue.

Yet, it's hard to judge on noise alone. I wouldn't rule out lifters, but I think it's something else. Wish I could help more.

Check out this old thread of mine. Do you have the PE? Does it happen at a specific RPM range? If so this could be it.

Mine ticks, but only when i let it idle for 5 or more minutes. If i rev it a bit once it starts ticking it goes away. it sounds nothing like this though. This almost sounds like a band tensioner pulley.

Thanks everyone. I'm still not sure what it is. I don't have time to do anything about this before going on Christmas vacation so I'll be bringing my car into BMW after that. I just hope it's nothing too serious.

Yes not a lifter tick. I'd be concerned driving with that noise to be serious

I have noticed my interior Fan made funny noises like a Vrr sound. turn off the Heat and fan settings and good luck tracking this down.
(Btw Video sound didnt work for me today, it could be my PC)

Yeah. I've been trying not to drive much over the past week.

Wanted to give an update on this. Got my car back from the service centre. Turns out the root cause was a bad power steering pump which they replaced. It was all done under warranty and the noise seems like it's completely gone. Going to keep an ear out for it over the next few days but so far so good.

Not to thread jack, I have a 2013 128i an I also experience a lifter like tick... it's been doing it since my car was last at the dealer for a bad rear rotor :/ it only had 2 additional miles on it (I take a pic of my odo) as a safety thing. Any idea?
