I use http://www.eagleone.com/pages/produc...=1006&cat=5006 and have pretty good results. I have not used it on a 1M exhaust though but can't think of any reason you couldn't. The tips on my 2002 M Coupe had a very similar looking finish.

I use Meguirs NXT metal polish and ultra fine wire wool. Apply the polish after washing and drying the pipes. Leave for 10 mins and then buff with the wire wool. You'll get an amazing finish

This is the wire wool I use:

Install a cutout/dump in the exhaust, should solve the problem.

I just make it a practice to wipe them with a soft cloth every time I'm done driving the car. It may be a PITA but my tips always shine.

I usually use "lacknafta", which according to google translate is "mineral spirits" in english... Works like a charm, removes tarmac aswell.

Works perfectly, no elbow grease, and no mess. This (or a like product) is what you should be using:

If you have access to Sonax products, grab yourself a tube of their chrome and alupaste. I have used it with great results.
It's durable, removes contaminants and tends to help coat the metal to prevent dirt/exhaust build up.

As Aussie_in_London says, an application of CG Jetseal works a treat for that added base layer of protection.

BINGO!!! I thought I was the only one who used this product. It's a phenomenal metal polisher which literally eats through the gunk on the exhaust tips, effortlessly. I also noticed that after using this product, it's a lot easier to keep the tips clean.

I've been using Brasso - as it cuts nicely through the soot. I brought some Megs Metyl polish and tried it but reverted back to the brasso as it was best at getting the tough soot off after I hadn't washed the car in about 5 weeks and 500miles (sorry).

Used the brasso on the heavily sooty bits especially and hopefully the megs will protect a little more!

I've just sprayed some simple green on there and rubbed it off with a microfiber cloth. Works perfect.
