Not gonna start the usual argument but if you want a manual they are much harder to find and the DCT certainly won't suffice. Something to think about!

If you get a few tickets early on the answer is yes. It shows you dont know how to handle the power on a public road.
Every car has too much power if not used properly. If you buy it keep the nannies on - dont get into a situation that will require a split second decision with turbos kicking in. Go to a few autocrosses, and if possible car club drivers eds to get your rocks off, and when someone says "Chicken McFly" dont take the bait. And dont modify it. Learn to handle what you have for a few years. If in a few years if you want to modify it, then do it. You will read about young people on this board getting into accidents. Could they have been avoided if the driver had more experience? Could accidents old farts get into have been avoided if the old fart wasnt old with slower reflexes? I put my 16 yo daughter in a manual 323Ci. Not much power compared to what's out there. But she also drives the 128i and Cayman because she has shown herself to be responsible. She also probably has better reflexes than most of the population which will get better because the deal with the car included her going to autocrosses now, and DEs as soon as she is allowed to go.

This is an insane first car to me. Insanely expensive to service, it's not reliable, it's very fast and it gets terrible gas mileage. If your only goal is to go fast, learn on something simple, like a honda or a nissan. They have way bigger aftermarkets, and in the case of the 350z/g35 and quick hondas, have the ability to make a bunch of power. They are more reliable and replacement parts are way cheaper, and they have massive communities and a billion posts on every subject in their respective forums.

Where does the kid say he wants to modify the car? He said he wants to learn to wrench on it. Where did he say his only goal is to go fast? I said it could be a rolling coffin for a new driver. He asked if it was too fast for a new driver. I gave him my thoughts. Is it too powerful for a new driver? I bet I would get flamed big time if I said it was. My buddies Roush Stage 3 is too powerful for just about everyone, and is a chiropractor's dream. If the kid thinks he is responsible enough to refrain from doing stupid things, buy it. Pamper it, maintain it, and enjoy it. You wont find more car for $11,000. 70,000 is barely broken in.

Buy it just to take the stupid M badge off the back.
Seriously, you need to test drive it to see how much pep the engine still has. Aside from the other issues people have mentioned (ie. hpfp and water pump), you need to really see if the turbos are still in good shape. The waste gates can start to rattle and eventually you will need to replace the turbos which is big bucks. If they're in good shape and still deliver good power you could get another 50K or more out of them. Once you pass 100k BMW repairs can get pretty expensive and you may want to pass on this car if you think the owner has flogged it.

It's your uncle. With luck, you'll know and like each other much longer than you will know the car. He's asking a fair price. Settle on a number that won't damage the relationship
