Hey all, I am looking at buying a 2011 135i with just under 80k miles. It's a manual.

My question is this -- assuming it doesn't have much documented maintenance history, what should I budget for immediate "peace of mind" maintenance? I assume I would want to change the brake fluid, manual transmission fluid, not sure what else?

Would it be worth it to go ahead and change the HPFP or water pump at purchase too, and if so how much does that typically cost?

A 2011 will have the N55 engine so the HPFP is not an issue. No need to change it.

I recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection at a good reputable Indy shop. I'd also ask the seller for records or where the work was done. If a dealer did the work you might be able to find out what's been done & when. If you get the car fax it'll let you know where the car has been registered and you can contact the bmw dealers there.

If no records at all then I'd change the oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid and spark plugs. At 80k the transmission & differential fluid are due as well (there is a good DIY on it by user wolfe).

If the water pump hasn't been done I'd consider the water pump & thermostat too. At 80k it's either been done or will be needed. They tend to go at around 60-80k on the 135. If it was done then just coolant flush & fill.

The air filter & cabin filter are both easy and inexpensive. The power steering fluid is easy using the turkey baster method.

Gangplank gave good advice. Try to find all records possible, and (assuming there are no records of past work) have the following done:

General Maintenance:
  • Oil & Oil Filter
  • Spark Plugs
  • Differential Fluid
  • Brake Fluid
  • Trans Fluid
  • Air filter
  • Cabin Air filters
  • Coils

Bigger stuff:
  • Water Pump, T-Stat, Coolant (all during same job)
  • Oil Filter Housing Gasket & Valve Cover Gasket (during same job)
  • Check belt and tensioner pulley

Buy everything on FCP Euro when possible, they have a lifetime replacement warranty. Use the oil, buy more, pour the old oil in the containers and ship it back in a flat rate box for a refund. This applies to everything they sell; fluids, parts brakes etc.

I'm currently looking to purchase my first car, and I really like how the 128i E88 with red seats looks and drives. I test drove one with 57k miles on it. Do you think it makes a good car for a first time car buyer fresh out of college?

My 135i has been reliable and it's not that much more to maintain than other cars if you use a good Independent BMW shop for repairs. The 128i even more so I'd imagine. That said if something major happens it can be quite a bit more at the dealer.

A well cared for 128i is likely to not be a big financial drain. Get a good pre-purchase inspetion (PPI) and look at the maintenance records.

If you are inclined, able and have the time to do your own maintenance, you can have a fun pretty reliable car. I bought a BMW CPO and keep hoping (well almost) for something to go wrong to justify the extra cost of CPO

Purchasing a BMW 128 I's?

I'm purchasing an automatic 2012 BMW 128 I from CARMAX with 49K miles on it. What should I be worried about? Are these cars reliable? I don't really have a clear answer to this question.

The 128 is pretty solid, Auto's are always more of a risk than manual, do you standard used car checks and get a PPI done by a local BMW dealership. Should be between $125-$180 and they're extremely thorough. See if the seller will split the cost, if you don't buy it you can give them the results to share with the next interested person. If the dealer/individual selling the car is not willing to allow this, that's a red flag.

Agree with matticus. PPI (pre purchase inspection) from a dealer or a good independent BMW shop but not just any mechanic.

I just purchased a 128i E88. When I run the VIN it tells me that I have a N51 engine. Can someone tell me what is the difference between the N51 & the N52.

There are a lot of 128i owners here and I'm sure someone will chime in, but in the meantime, this popped up in a quick google search (same engines in the E9x cars).

N52 is ULEV. The N51 is SULEV., which is a higher emissions standard that is used in CA and a bunch of other states. Lots of info on the web.

SULEV is not a bad thing. Same basic power output, better emissions, higher compression and longer emissions warranty on certain parts in some states.

Also if you plan on tuning your car the n51 already has the 3 stage intake as Esteban noted. The 3 stage was used on some higher HP output engines, and with an ECU reflash can add a bit more to the 128.

I'm currently shopping for a 128i and wondering if there is a easy way to spot the difference between the N51 and N52 from the type of engine bay picture typically found in car ads.

Also, does anybody know of a working VIN decoder site that details the vehicle options? Either mdecoder is broken or I used up all my searches and the others linked here are offline.
