No symptoms = no need for carbon cleaning?

Hello everyone,

I have a 135i with 70,000km on it and a Cobb Stage 1 tune with no other mods. I drive it about 5k per year.

It runs really well, no misfires or roughness at idle, no hesitations all the way up to redline. P3 gauge measured 0-60 at about 4.5s. I am trying to decide between a carbon cleaning and an FMIC (no budget for both).

My question is: if my car is running smoothly and feels like it pulls well throughout the power band in all gears, is there a need to do a carbon cleaning?

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

You will have to do carbon clean eventually on N54. Since you aren't having issues you could get the intercooler now and do the carbon clean later.

Just do it before 100k. Also remember it becomes more of a bear of a job the longer you wait.

What FMIC are you looking at?

I'm looking at the VRSF 5" stepped. Just based on price and reviews. Any other suggestions?

True, it does get harder, but I plan to pay to get it done so it wouldn't matter to me. At only 5k a year of driving I may be able to delay it for years if it remains asymptomatic.

Driving that little, I don't see a carbon cleaning making any sense.
The tires will dryrot off before you notice any change in running.

Also an intercooler probably won't benefit you.
It sounds like you just want to spend money for the sake of filling a void, or that you think the car hasn't broke and you must be neglecting something.
If you want to go down the modification route, set a goal and make a plan to get there. Randomly buying parts you'll end up spending more than you need or buying parts twice.

And if you must buy an intercooler, again plan for the future. The 5" ones will be quickly outgrown. Think about the Wagner or a good 7" unit. Fin density is what you want.
