Engine Temp Hot & Engine Overheated Message?!?!

Hey folks, today on the way to work I all of a sudden got a bunch of warning messages;
Engine Temp is High
Engine Temp is Hot
Engine is Overheated

The oil temp gauge was normal, no coolant low message, oil level is normal.

Car shut down, luckily I was just pulling into the parking lot.

Possible false errors? Possible water pump failure? I drove about 2 mins 1/4 mile after getting the hot/overheated message.

Thanks

Most likely water pump failure. How many miles on it? On a side note, it's bad form on BMW's part to not have a coolant temp gauge, even a dumb one with no numbered gradiations. At least then, you'd know if you were starting to run warm. BTW- has BMW ever gotten engine cooling right? Even the old belt driven pumps were notorious for failing.

Thanks, my fear but thankfully I have about 46-47k miles, still under factory warranty, my CPO does not start until Sept or 50k.

Yeah with a temp gauge perhaps would of seen it running high before this morning. Unbelievable the pump fails so soon, even worse than the E36/46 pump issues.

Hop on over to the e8x water pump failure poll, and get in the long line of people who feel your pain. I was planning to do my pump at 75k. I talked to a local, well regarded indy shop, and he said don't wait that long. I'll probably do it this fall at 60k. My back hurts just thinking about it! Just flushed and changed the coolant, too!

Holy cow that thread/poll is unreal. Did the E9xs have similar problems. Checked out getting DCT car into N without starting thread. My SA said it was as simple as just powering on without starting and shifting to N?
