True the feeling is that the more competition , the better...

I think the reaction is to that based on how things have gone before , especially when comparisons between the standard A3 and 1er are taken into consideration.

But this is Audi and to quote our CEO Norbert Reithofer " We know exactly what they (Audi) do... Because we do it first.

In otherwords BMW sneezes Audi catches a cold!

It will be interesting to see the result as both have advantages and disadvantages.
The Audi might have more practicality and more performance, BMW has the history and the passion to build serious enthusiast cars. The 1M is based on a great drivers car.

They could be equals or it could be like the RS5 and any other previous RS predecessor. good, but not as good as the BMW.

I will deduce from this statement that the 1M will be rated below 340hp.

POWER is not everything and that is something Audi still have to learn , straight-line speed might be their priority. But at BMW we know every road is not the Autobahn and that the best roads are not straight.

That is why we engineer our cars because want you to really feel the car when it takes that corner. In a BMW M there has to be the perfect synthesis between car and driver. That is the M philosophy it is not just a 135i with more power same as why the M3 is not just a 335i with more power etc.
An M car should be something special and BMW M excell with every model because it is not just a standard BMW made faster it has to be completely individual from it's basis.
The differences have to be noticed by the customer. Wow! it's fast is not
a full statement to decribe a performance car.

That is why the faster Audi RS5 is outmatched by the more dynamically superior BMW M3.

I'm very interested to see how the RS3 and the 1M compare on winding roads ... I'm pretty sure that the 1M just gives the rear-wheel drive feeling that I like so much more than the slightly numb steering feel and the strange weight distribution of the Audi TTS/TTRS. But all the feel would be of little use if it's just feel ... and the figures are missing. I will stay tuned to Nürburgring times and times on narrow tracks done by various car magazines ...

There is one thing I like about Audi and their RS models: they don't care if the RS3 has the same 0-100 km/h times as the much more expensive RS5 and better acceleration to 100 km/h than a RS4. They seem to understand that RS3 and RS5 have different customer bases.

I feel if I pipe up here in defence of Audi I will be muzzled. But what the heck.

@Scott, while the M3 has probably won more track comparisons than lost the fact remains that the RS5 has won a few which suggests it's not as cut and dry as you are making out.

Next the 1er vs A3, again each have won on different occasions so another time when it won't be cut and dry. Maybe the 1M will be preferred by more reviewers but it's not them who are putting their money down and each car will find enough customers to fulfill production.

Oh I nearly forgot, BMW don't make the better driver's car, Audi do and it's called the R8.

Leave the R8 out. It is a better car (could be even better if RWD, ex Gallardo LP550-2), but this is because BMW doen't have a rival. If they did have one it would be better, well I hope so, or maybe they d not have any because they know they would not be a better one?

By the way footie, I did not have internet fora very long time. Anything new in the automotive world? I heard about Audi Quattro Concept. Is it going to be produced? And anything new about the McLaren MP4-12C, any reviews?

Another tidbit is Audi is making the new RS4 in wagon form only. If that comes to the US I'll reconsider buying the M3.

BMW better hope this doesn't happen at a reasonable price or I'm off to a manufacturer who pushes the envelope as opposed to fitting cars into marketing segments.

UK pricing has been set for the RS3, despite a huge amount of standard equipment the price is only £39900. To put that into perspective the TT-RS with the same amount of kit would cost almost £10000 more.

If it handles as well or better than the Golf R which I believe it will and we already know how little work and investment is required to boost the engine to 430hp, then this and the equally tunable 1M could well be two of the stars of 2011. I can't think why anyone would want to own an RS5 or M3.

For the high-reving naturally aspirated V8 sound!

But now seriously you are right. If the M1 laps the N-Ring under 8:10 min with only 340 PS (written), with 380 PS (written) it would completely destroy the M3 and its 420/450 PS. A lighter car is always better (for piloting).

Looked at the pricing released throughout Europe on the RS 3. It was priced at 2000 Euro less than the S4, so this relative price comparison is probably more relevant than doing a currency conversion of 50,000 Euros (luck for us Americans, prices here are always cheaper than from a pure currency differential multiplier may suggest).

Interesting to see what BMW do with the 1 series M as far as standard kit considering what has been removed to get the costs down.
I'm thinking the same, IMO 1M needs more kit and a twin clutch option if it stands to compete successfully in the manner quoted above.

The only point I want to make is I hope BMW brings the M3 seats in 1M because RS3's recaro seat with quilted leather pattern is gorgeous and looks supportive just from appearance in the photograph.

Audi's response to 1 M

Am quite confident it will not be as good as 1m to drive, but it is still to be seen.

very cool, but the quattro will likely inhibit a lot of the sideways fun like usual. Those of you who have driven an awd sports car on public roads know how much effort is required to get the tail out smoothly (i.e. without crashing lol)

It takes a lot longer for an awd car to start tailing, when it does eventually happen it is very difficult to straight it out as it is going all over the place. I was once driven by a dude who's A4 2.8 quattro started bouncing left and right, was a scary experience being in a passanger seat.
