Which rim width is better for a 255 RE71R up front: 8.5" or 9"
I have a set of 4 APEX ARC8 17x8.5 42 mm offset rims and just took delivery of a set of 4 ForgeStar F14 17x9 50 mm offset (I think a 12mm spacer would be needed up front) and a set of 255-40 RE71Rs for autocross and was wondering which rim width would be better for the front? The front tires are mounted on the APEX rims which rub a little on dips on the street, but it's livable and the rims/tires aren't my DD setup. If the 9" rims would be better for the tire/traction then I can have them swapped when I get the correct spacers. I'm using the 9" rims for the rear so I can play with the spacing of the front.

The wider wheel will be faster.

Right now I have 3.3* and have the 255's for street and race mounter on 8.5" rims. I'll be moving the race tires to a 9" rim after I adjust the camber to 3.5* and get a 12mm spacer. The top of the front tires tuck under the fenders and don't rub, except if I hit a hard bump or a fast dip in the road.

A 255 RE71R is a BIG tire and is the absolute limit of what fits well under stock fenders - with 3.2 degrees of camber it BARELY fits at a low ride height (which is exactly what happens when you compress the soft stock springs). -Mark

I have had similar dealings as mentioned. I ran 245 Hankook RS4s on 17x8.5 EC-7s up front. On stock suspension, I would get a minor bit of rubbing on the outside shoulder under heavy compression on the street. The inside of the rim/tire was also *extremely* close to the shock tower and I think there was a slight bit of rubbing there too. Had I tracked the car in this condition, I would have been rubbing for sure. It would not have been anything to completely destroy a tire or the fender, but it would have been rubbing nonetheless.
I added Dinan camber plates and it resolved the rubbing issue on the outside shoulder. No rubbing even under the heaviest compression. I then added a 3 ml Apex spacer just for piece of mind and still no rubbing on the inside or outside. A 255 "may" fit depending on the tire construction, but you're really getting to the limits without using an adjustable suspension and camber plates. |

Sorry; I did not state RE71s but ran 255 Falken 615K Gen 1 on Kosei K1 17x8.5 for AutoX with no rubbing on stock suspension. I am currently running 17x9 RE71s with around the same camber at not a low ride height (JRZ RS2) and have no problems. Maybe you guys are just running the car harder than me. |

A possibly shorter sidewall height (if that's the case) will help a little, and coilovers with stiffer than stock springs will help as well. Still I'm a bit amazed at 255 after everything I've read and even what I've seen on my own car.
The 255 might fit for you but I'd consider yourself very lucky! Most people try quite hard without success, you've got the right combo for sure. |

Two weekend ago I had the 255-40 17 RE71Rs mounted on my ARC8 8.5 rims up front and have been driving around with them since. I'm trying to get a few miles on the tires before the first autocross event with them this coming weekend. I do on occasion get a little rub on the front bump "tab" but that's it. That's on Swift Spec R springs and -3.3* camber. My DD rims are a square set of the OEM 18x8.5 with a 10mm spacer in from with 255-35 tires and no rub. I plan to go to -3.5* up front and when the 12.5mm spacer arrives mount the front tires on the 17x9" 50 mm offset rims I currently have on the back. I already test fitted them on the front and didn't have any rub when driving around the neighbor and the RE71Rs will just be used for autocross.

That's a 255 RE71R on a 17x9 +35 with -3.6 degrees camber (including longer lower control arms similar to the ///M arms). As you can see, it's pretty damn tight. I also do not have any room to go to a higher offset (closer to the strut) without the tire touching the strut - Ohlins R&T. -Mark

Not to drag out my own thread but just wanted to share what I have for others reference.
I can say that a RE71R in 255x40x17 on a 17"x9" with 50mm offset and a 12.5mm spacer does fit with minimal rubbing on the bumper tabs on hard bumps. They actually rub much less than when mounted on the 17"x8.5" with 42mm offset. I have -3.3* camber using Ground Control Street Camber plates and the M3 control arm bits. I have Swift Spec R springs with a 1/2" spacer up front. I went with a square 17"x9"x50mm setup so I can rotate the tires front to rear. I get no rubbing when auto-crossing my car. I also no longer get any rubbing in the rear and don't have my fenders rolled. I went with ForgeStar rims and so far are happy with them even tho they seem to be about 2 lbs heavier that the 8.5" Apec ARC8 rims I switched from (and most likely will be selling soon).

Apex 18x9 et42 with 255/265 ran fine for me with a slight drop & -3* camber.
The rear, not so much, need something closer to et50 out back with 9in wide wheels and et60 with 9.5s

I have two Hyper Silver 18x9 +42 ARC8's for sale if you're interested. I've used them up front for bother 255s and 265s. PM me if you'd like.
