the M-ystique has faded.
Exactly. The bmw cars are just as good as m cars. They just need some minor tweaks Like LSD and good suspension. That is just a fraction of the price if you upgrade to a M version. A 135i with an LSD and good suspension. Or an M1 which will cost you a lot more and a suspension which is still mass production shit. And for the low weight you don t have to buy M versions anymore because they weight just as much as bmw cars. New M3 1655kg. |

A New Benchmark for the Upcoming M1 Engine
No doubt the big attention grabbers at the Frankfurt Auto Show will be the Audi A4, BMW M3, BMW 135i, and Porsche GT2, all of which will make their public debut there. Since the M3 has gone too much upmarket and is considered too heavy and soft, the M1 will have to satisfy true sporting aspirations amongst BMW enthusiasts. Porsche's new 3.6 liter engine appearing in the GT2 should serve as the new benchmark of what can still be attained, given that they deploy a new principle, combined with turbo technology, to cool the air in the chamber and achieve greater efficiency and raw performance: 530 horsepower @ 6500 rpm and 680 Nm torque @ 2200 rpm is pretty good! Scaling this down to 3 liters gives 440 hp and 565 Nm, more than the V8 of the new M3 achieves. This gives you an idea what potential there is for the M1. The problem is that performance in this ballpark will easily make the M1 cost at least $50K, if not much more, since the liberal use of aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber must also be part of such a package.

Yes indeedy - can't remember the color name but that'll blend right into the horizon on summer day. Stealth blue. ; -)
Those pix showed up under the heading of 'M1' in one of the US buff-books, IIRC, earlier this spring. I do not care for the styling of the lower front fascia, however. |

Yup that's how I imagined it to be. While it is important for someone to get the M I think I can live with the 2s loss on the track in the 135i. I will probably be having as much fun and I can't justify 20k for additional two seconds. I will be tempted though. :-)

I can understand your reaction, but remember that track was only 1.1 miles and the time was around 50 sec. That is about 1/2 as long as most tracks in the US, so figure about 4 seconds different. And remember that the CSL would LAP the M3 in 25 laps...

Anybody who has ever tracked before knows that being ass-happy and tail wagging is one of the slowest ways around the track (even though it's probably damn fun, as evidenced by the silly ass grin). I don't see the CSL driver doing much drifting there.
I think the lapping in that scenario would be greatly exhaggerated. |

You can make a car like the 135i a whole lot more than 2 sec faster for far less $$ than $20k. I truly hope BMW knows what they're doing if they decide to come out with an M1... it would be utterly embarasing if the 135i were in the same league speed-wise, what with its huge upgrade potential. |

One HUGE factor we need to keep in mind is that M3 CSL has cup tires (i.e. racing slicks). That fact along could mean the 1.0-2.0s difference. So in order to really test the difference between the 2 cars, same set of tires need to be applied on both cars. Then we'll see the effect of weight saving (+ slightly more HP) translate in actual lap time.

Yeah, my experience with Cup tires means that the regular M3 would've been the faster car in that test, unless the track or tires were cold. Cups usually mean about 4 seconds faster on a 1.7 mile track, in my experience.
Cups don't work until they get hot though (180F). Otherwise, they're worse than street tires... |

i dont see how the regular m3 would be faster than a car with the exact same tires and chassis that weighed less, and had a slightly higher power output.

Well, I gave you one possible explanation - cold track & tires would make the Cups slower than standard tires. Otherwise, I can only assume that the samples of the cars weren't representative or the driving was responsible...

Since BMW seems to be bending all of their rules with the 1er anyway, I would love to see the first awd m car.
My perfect M1:
