Help! Hit a piece of tire, tire rash on fender and door
I's on the freeway yesterday and a car kicked up a piece of tire and I cannot avoid it , all I can do is brake, to maybe 40mph, that tire flew and hit my car on the driver side from the front fender to the door and mirror . Luckily it didn't flew higher or at an angle to hit me in the face as I've my windows down... it could have been worst... The tire sorta wrap a bit around the mirror and hit the door again below the handle and made a small ding there, barely noticeable. Loud bang and the mirror folded up (luckily no damage, mirror still works correctly). totally freaked me up as it happened so fast...
So now, the front driver side fender, door and mirror all has tire rash. The ridge/crease along the front half of the car has a long line of tire mark. I see some tiny scratches/paint chip on the mirror cap (time for CF mirror caps?), but my main concern is the paint/clear coat where there's tire rashes are. Not sure if there are any scratches underneath those rubber or even worst, stripping my clear coat. Can a car wash/detail clear those tire rash up? or shall I just take it to a body shop just in case? Thanks |

It's hard to tell just how deep the damage is, but the tire rash can usually be removed. I've removed it before with claybar and polish. It sounds like it's pretty rough, so you might even want to try some solvent (even like a tar remover). Be careful how hard you scrub on it, but if it's just some color traded from the rubber, you should be able to get it out.
As for the scratches, a good detail shop might be able to help if they're not too deep. Try and remove the tire rash and see where you're at. If it's still bad, I'd look into going to a body shop and taking it up with insurance. |

True, as will 3M adhesive remover (or goof-off)... I have used a decent carnuba wax on a MF towel to remove cone marks (which are nothing more than tire marks from tire rubber transferred to cones). If you have any polish, like Meguiars 205, that works well too. I would start with the least abrasive thing that you have.. try the wax, to the more abrasive (polish or goof-off). |

^ sorry no pic, coz I don't wanna remind myself where the marks are :P
I've got some goo gone gel spray from OSH and it remove all the tire marks. doesn't seems to have any thing left on the clear coat.. but there are a bunch of small scratches and paint chips near the door handle It's not that noticeable, they're kinda those "if you don't know where it is, it'll take you a while to find it". at least I hope, coz I see it every time I open my door |
