When did you get your car? I thought we got our cars around the same time and I have about 6k miles on mine already. And I work from home.

Did your service guy/gal say anything to you about making a good decision to change the oil after the break in was done, or did they say it was a waste of time? I'm trying to decide what to do with my engine oil and diff fluid.

Nice. My SA stressed the point with me that there is no reason to change the oil at 1.5k. No matter what I said it was just a "bad idea."
So I did it by myself....at home.

I called up my SA at P&W in Pittsburgh for a break-in differential oil change (I'd already done the oil change myself,) and he said that it wasn't required, and that it was technically a lifetime fill. I said that I understood that, let's do it anyway, and he was cool with that. He seemed decent enough, so I'll probably be more inclined to do more business with him now. |

I don't get the attitude at some dealers.
The standard line should be: "You're car does not require an oil change at this time, but we would be happy to change it for you...for $89.99..." ...Or whatever they charge. |

I changed my oil and filter at ~600 miles and 1400 miles. I'm gonna change it again at 3000 miles and every 3000 miles after that.
If it stops coming out black, I may start increasing the mileage between oil changes. I'm convinced that an engine will last forever if you keep your oil completely clean. I'm filing all the receipts just so I have documentation. The dealership I bought it from said they'd change it at 1,400 miles, but my local dealership refused and said it was unnecessary. The way I see it, they only care if my car makes it to 50,000 miles without major problems. They want my car to die after the warranty is up so I buy a new one from them. For all the premium gas I buy, what's another $50 for a purolator and 7 quarts of synthetic? To put it nicely, I take my car for spirited drives, frequently, and I want it to last 200K miles. I'll probably inspect and rebuild my turbos at 50K when my warranty is up. You guys in the northeast using 5W-30? |

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=6218 I don't think I'll do a 3,000 mile change, though. I will probably keep the interval at around 5,000 - 7,500, depending on how I feel. One thing, I hate adding oil in between changes, just because I hate having the oil get that low. If I notice that the car starts consistently being down 1 qt around, say, 6,000 miles, I'll probably start doing 5,000 mile changes. |

After doing ED, I changed my oil at 2500. I changed it again at 7500. I will change it next at 15,000. Every 7,500 after that. That is my plan. Oh yeah, I use designer oil.

Changed at 1200 miles, and will change it every 6 months or 7500. I guarantee you that if BMW did not provide the free change for the first 4 years (one at 15K or 1 year), they would tell you to change it every 3-6 months......

I don't see them as sales people, at least not the ones I've worked with with BMW and Audi. However, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, etc...they do seem to be more sales like, but I think that's because they have short limited warranties. BMWs have excellent warranties and they cover maintenance. There is less reason to try and talk someone into a service. If the service is needed the warranty takes care of if and the shop gets paid just like if the customer had to pay. Some do get cocky, but most are pretty good at knowing what's up. BMW and Audi seem to have a higher caliber of knowledge all around the shop. Customers get cocky too, and think they too know it all just because they read something on the internet You have to consider that these guys see a lot more than we do. Still, not everyone is as knowledgeable as the next guy. Just in this thread there are shops that say not to change the oil, and then you'll find a couple that think it's a good idea to change early. For me, I don't subscribe to the early just for insurance mentality. It's not cheap insurance. It's a waste of money and worse a waste of resources. There is no need to throw away perfectly good oil just to "feel better". That's just imo. |
