If you get charged for oil that isn't supplied that is fraud. That's criminally illegal. I would have made a very significant scene at any place who tried to pull that on me. Either I'd get a refund or they'd have to call the cops to haul me away, after which I'd spend the rest of my life doing everything I could to put them out of business.

How do you people put up with that? I'd completely flip my lid.

The Mann filter coming from Mexico isn't going to be an issue that would keep me from buying. Did a couple illegal aliens pop out of your filters box?

Definitely a quality issue I'm concerned with and I think most would agree, companies that decide to move production to save money are never the same. Honestly oil filters are nothing to go cheap on...please tell me you're not like a FRAM or anything on sale I go with guy...this is what happens when ya go with a sexy FRAM. (NOT MINE!)

You can do it yourself for a lot less than $75-90. More like $45 to do it yourself, plus the satisfaction you know it was done right.

I've used that coupon for my car twice at two different dealers. Sounds like your deal is just being dumb

Totally agree. Or they just want to rip me off.

+1. Costs me about $50 CAD + an hour (I take my time) and I know it's done right. Plus I get to spend quality time with my car haha.

I just stock up when they come on sale (about twice a year)

Yeah, I loaded up on about 14 bottles of Castrol 0W-30 for $3 a piece when Autozone had them on closeout. Of course, we are pretty lucky here in the US, since Wally World sells 5Q jugs of Castrol 0W-40 for $21-22 all the time as well.

My next oil change will cost about $35. I have a partial 5 quart of Mobil 1 0-40 European so 1 more is about $25 plus about $10 for a filter (hopefully I already have it). It will take much less time to change than a drive to the dealer and back. I am missing the little door in the underpan after a dealer oil change. I guess they didn't get it back in properly. Minor but annoying. Letting others work on your car has consequences.

$80 see the coupon

To everyone, can you do an oil change 3 months earlier? Want to take advantage of the coupon.

The dealer will usually do it 2 months early at most under warranty, but if you're paying for it I'm sure they'll do it whenever you want

I just paid $70 at the dealer with a coupon. Another dealer nearby charges double that for the same service. Definitely shop around if you can.

I didn't buy the tools because this is something I expect to do every other year or so. But in my case, bought 6 Q of Premium Oil + Filter + Labor = $70, in August/2019 for my X1 xDrive28 2015 (e84). You'll need 6 Q but will find only either 5 Q or box with 6x1Q (which is more tha $30). There's a video of a girl doing it, very easy, but, again, I don't have the tools and didn't feel like buying it just for this matter. That's guys!!

Interesting comment about tools. Low height does require some mechanism to raise and hold so I guess costs (and storage) could add up. My biggest concern over the years has always been what to do with the oil (though in recent years near every community has developed a drop off point).

100% agree!

Btw guys... Did you see my collection of oil filters ? I would only use BMW (dealer)bought filter or Mann and Mahle oil filter. There is a difference. Especially for those who choose to go with BMW's foolishly long oil changes.

The best oil is fresh oil!! There are so many sensors and plastic bits(chain guides and ramps), VANOS, etc... inside the engine that - I personally would not go with a long OCI.

Recent DIY oil change... PA or AL... What the heck does this mean?

See 02:40... all oil filters are NOT the same!

As for DIY or not... I am a DIY type of guy. I don't want anyone else near my car... and changing the oil is really easy once you have the right tools. And it won't cost you a fortune.

I really LOVE my Dimple oil drain plug. They were cheap($30ish) but it has a super strong magnet and it really picks up micro bits/shavings of metal floating in the oil. I highly recommend one.

Also this magnetic oil drain tool from Amazon... I first thought it was a bit gimmicky, but it saves your fingers from getting burnt as you loosen the oil drain bolt. Also highly recommend.

You can find oil change kits for as little as $74 online... like from GetBMWparts.com

Tool also keeps one from dropping the drain plug into the drain pan because one took the guard out.
Never seen that tool, but now I have to have one.

Most parts store take it. I just write "DED" on the old bottles with used oil in them and take the old ones to Autozone or whatever parts store is closest.

I have a collection center for the county "dump" about 8 miles from my house. They have a big tank for you to dump your used oil into and smaller drums for the filter and oil containers. I don't want to make that trip after every oil change so I keep an old 5 gallon paint container - I let the paint thoughly dry so it doesn't get involved - and fill that first then take it to recycle maybe every 18 months. I have taken my old oil to Advance auto parts places in the past and they were fine with it. Just walk into the back of their store and they had a tank too. They probably get a little money for the old oil. They are definitely not paying to get rid of it.

My mother had to buy a different car after Walmart failed to put oil in the engine when she took it there for an oil change. I had a little thread damage to the drain plug from dealer oil changes plus the plastic cover over the drain plug went missing. If you do not have the space to do the work or just don't want to get dirty or don't have somebody to show you how it's your choice. But thinking you are doing your car a favor by not doing it yourself or thinking you are saving time or money are not valid excuses from my point of view. It definitely saves money and I can easily change my oil and recycle it in less time than it takes to drive to my dealer and back for an oil change (they are on the other side of town). The total investment in tools would be recouped the first oil change. It is just a special cap wrench + a ratchet and 17mm socket + a oil drain pan and funnel. I guess you also need a way to get the car in the air a bit, ramps or a jack + stand. But none of the tools are expensive, Harbor Freight has all but the cap wrench and their tools work fine for this.

I am with Jim D. Though it takes me much longer because I spend time looking at other stuff. Do I have leaks, is there dust that I can wipe off, is the undercarriage as clean as I would like it?
First oil change after I got the car I spent nearly an hour wiping grease and dirt off the painted surface in the wheel well (which meant taking wheels off). That kind of thing makes me more comfortable with condition of car. Do the same with my other vehicles, too, now that maintenance/warranty agreements have ended.
