Has anyone used any other batteries then the oem ones purchased from the dealer? Autozone, Advaced auto, Napa? I have the software to register and program it so that's not an issue .

just search online. plenty of BMW owners have used other batteries from the places you listed and more. As long as you register it properly it shouldn't be a problem.

I ended up picking up the autocraft AGM battery.

I programmed it and registered it using Carly for BMW App with my iPhone

Did you have to order the adapter from Europe? Is there a North American distributor for it?

I think You should use a battery that is same physical size as original and the same starting amperage.
Note that, some BMW models with the stop/ start facility need a higher duty battery.
Some say that you only have to replace battery with the same CCA (Cold start amperage).

Have any of you used a deep cycle/dry cell battery such as the Optima yellow? I assume with appropriate coding they could be a reliable choice to manage the extensive electronics on modern BMW's?

I ordered (below) from amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o09_s00

it was a little smaller than stock, but still fits perfectly. Just had to move the screw down clamp one slot over. Reprogrammed with Carly. Been working perfectly. It's hard finding batteries with AH ratings on them.

The battery I posted was bigger then stock and had to use the largest screw hole location . Had to use a magnet to get that screw down in there . There's not much room to work with under there. I'm not sure about the optima batteries. I honestly haven't seen anyone use one. I'm sure these exspensive AGM batteries are just as good and near the same price as an optima anyways

So Carly CAN be used to code in addition to the registering process, an AGM to an original lead acid situation? In addition to coding a different size battery? Just bought the app and dongle so curious about what it can do because I need a new battery at the moment and was just going to match exactly what I have in there now for ease of replacement and registration, cost on getbmwparts.com, and because I wasn't sure Carly could actually program a new battery type/size.

Awesome! What's the situation with going with a different size? Can we use any AGM battery that is the same as our previous in ah/cca and above or what is a good guideline?

Yes, you can use AGM batteries that have different ah than the OEM(which is 90ah)..the app will give you a list of options as to which type of battery and which ah your new battery has.

Just registered my advance auto H8 AGM battery via Carly without any issues.

Good deal...played around with some coding today and read the battery registration disclaimer. I didn't realize we had a 90ah battery in there stock since Tischer shows only lead acid replacements and 2 of the 3 available are under 90ah. Can't imagine why anyone would go with a lower rated battery knowing it wouldn't be enough.
