It means your car needs to be SERVICED!

How many miles? And how long has your can been in service from the delivery date? Probably just an oil change service due. Its in yellow right?

i have 11900. the service yellow light started to show last week. it only shows up when i start the car and then it disappears. the service sign does not show up any other time unless i start it. my last oil change was at 7500 and they told me every 12000.

You can go through the maintenance menu on your dash using the stalk on the left of the steering wheel... it'll tell you what you're due for. It gives you a mileage and date for each item I believe.

Does anyone read their owners manual any more? I mean it's a car, the second most expensive thing you will ever buy besides your home.

You guys really need to READ your owners manual. I understand that its easier to ask here though.

ANY TIME you see the "!" symbol it is calling your attention to a problem or warning! Could be an oil change, brakes, low fuel, low tire pressure of failure. ANYTHING!

thank everyone...i checked and it was the brake fluid...now i have another issue..i added the brake fluid, but it is still telling me it needs service and there is nothing else that needs service besides the brake fluid. i read through the owners manual trying to figure out how to reset it, but no luck..now i'm trying here...has anyone gone through this when they had to add more brake fluid?

My "service" light came on July 1. It would disappear after a few seconds. I figured out that it was my PA state inspection due, as the car was new in July, 2009. What else would it be? The car wasn't up for a regular BMW service.

I had it done locally, not worth the 2 1/2 drive to the dealer. The light still shows up, but, as I am finally nosing to the 15,000 service (had oil changed more often on my dime). I'll make the road trip for that.

It's probably not telling you to add brake fluid. Brake fluid needs to be changed every two years so if you took delivery in late 2008, you are due. If so, simply make an appointment with your dealer, have it taken care of and they will reset the car's computer.

I just took my car in today. The "service" light was on (27+k mi) The are doing... 1) oil 2) brake fluid 3) coolant if necessary 4) 2 recalls (seatbelt tensioner and tail light) 5) full inspection (this happens around 30K) 6) headlights (one is out) 7) wiper blades 8) interior cabin filter 9) prob air filter 10) rotate tires (I just did this but they do it for free for me even though it is not technically covered) 11) provide a 335d to drive (so F-ing fun)

So in short the service light is just there to tell you when to go in for MAINTENANCE. Nothing is wrong with you car.
