I dont know how they would do it, but I think every year BMWNA sends my anniversary gift to my dealer who in turn mails it to me. They both know who I am and where to find me. I cant see the plaque being much different. BMWNA could send them out to the corresponding dealerships once production is complete and the plaques are finished.

I'd agree with you there. I guess I can just see someone expending a lot of effort... but hey, for sure if no-one tries it, it won't happen!

Quite simple, you don't have to participate. Others who wish to nail down the actual number in the production line can do it 'unofficially'. If nothing else, a registry of owners would be cool.

How much effort? If you can do simple adding/subtraction it would be easy...again, all you really need is the first and last VIN # verified by BMW and the rest is just fill in the blanks.

"The 12th through the 17th character in your BMW's VIN indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturer's assembly line. The last four characters are always numeric."

Here is what the BMW code means:

You'll need a lot more than the ability to add and substract to achieve the goal we were discussing there - getting the NA BMW dealership network to supply and fit the plaques. You'll also need to do more than basic arithmetic to find someone to price and produce them, work out a method to collect payments and distribute the plaques to the dealerships.

Working out the plaque number range might be, if BMW will supply you with information that owners might otherwise expect to be private (i.e. their VIN), the easy bit, as you point out.

How about you make those plates just say:

'One of 800'

Because unless you're BMW themselves you're going to have a hard time figuring out the order the cars were produced (or should it be the order in which they were imported?) and mapping the VIN with the order of the car. And then there's no silly 'pissing contest' of 'who has the lowest sequence number', which really does not mean much... the total number of cars imported will be so small that they are all just as rare as any other one, and we already all know who got the first 'customer delivered' 1M in the world, and he's Canadian!

Sound like you are only interested if done through the BMW network and it's "official". If you are expecting BMW NA to provide and install a numbered plaque for EVERY 1M purchased, that is highly unlikely. Not everyone wants a plaque anyways. Personally I don't care one way or the other. I am more interested what number my 1M will fall on in the production line.

I had a Z4Mcoupe and we have a spread sheet with the complete list of official VIN numbers and production quantities(1815total). Going through the dealership would be a logistical challenge but organizing something here on the forum would be a lot easier. You figure out your number, I set up a group buy, I collect payments via PayPal, to those interested, and ship them out. You don't even have to stick it on the car, HELL just use it as a kick ass key chain! The plaque would look EXACTLY like the one pictured in the UK models if done right.

I'm not interested at all - my 1M is coming with a plaque.

If you look at my post, I was quoting and responding to Papethova, who said "Maybe even go as far as to say once production is complete everyone needs to go to a dealer to have the plaque installed". As I said, this is the point I was discussing, when you told me all it took was adding and subtracting. My point is simply that you were telling me how easy something I wasn't talking about would be ;-)

I really hope you guys get what you want though!

Alright then, fair enough. But, for someone not interested and not even in the US, you do have a strong opinion on the idea. I was replying to your most recent comment, in which you agreed that it was not a worthwhile effort unless it's official. Truth of the matter, I wouldn't want a plaque that just said 'ONE of 450', but rather an actual sequenced '3 of 450', just my opinion. Did you look at the Z4Mcoupe spread sheet? Pretty cool huh?

This would be useful even for you guys across the pond that are interested in actual number in the production line their vehicle is.

I guess my interest is that I posted the very first pics anywhere in the world of the UK 1M plaques that sparked this thread...

But hey, I think we're really on the same page - all I was saying is that I suspected getting the whole dealer network bought in would be difficult and therefore a risk. I didn't know showing supportive concern was uniquely the preserve of North Americans!

Like I said, but you ignored, my hope is you guys get what you want.

If they were making just 10 1M's then I could see the attraction of an individually numbered plaque but as it is I think it's just a cheap, half arsed gimmick (One of 450???) I'll be removing mine, will replace the smoke box lid if I have to.

No need to remove it- just get your dealer not to fix it in the first place

Question

Judging by some of the threads and post that continue to pop up, there still seems a lot of NA customers interested in plaque.

Well, the BMW gifts given to french owner got me thinking about the window decal. If I can get 50 or more members in a group buy I can get these made for ~$20 for qty(2). Reverse cut so you can apply inside the glass.

Or these, but they would be twice as much because they would be individual to each customer. The registry is coming along nicely and as soon as we get a final VIN for NA, I will update with one or both(decal/plaque).

I'd prefer they ramp up production on the car and not worry about some silly plaque.

I'd prefer people read the thread title and if they are not interested to keep their negative comments to themselves, but we can't have everything we want now can we?

Unless they look substantially better than the ones I've seen from other countries, I'm not really interested. Seem a bit cheap looking to me.

I like the idea. Maybe change the ///M to the M colors?

Let me re-phrase. I hope this fantastic idea actually turns out to be "1 of 1200" in the US market so my #2 deposit at my local dealer has a chance at an allocation. If that happens, I won't need a plaque to remind me how special the car is, or how lucky I am, but I won't begrudge anyone who wants one.
