Worried - Yellow Car on Lift Icon

Hi, havent been on here in a while.

I have a very early N55 135i. I took delivery of my '11 135i vert in July 2010. It has been great - flawless, great power, great MPGs, very enjoyable. It doesnt have a lot of use, Ive only put 4000 miles on it. I put it away in the fall, and have only pulled it out once over the winter (kept the battery on a smart float charger).

I took the car out Tuesday, drove it 30+ miles yesterday and all was fine. This morning, started the car to drive to work and I got the yellow car on the lift icon.

As I was going to work, I didnt have a lot of info, and figured it was because the computer says I need to do brake fluid in May of 2012. When I got in, I reviewed the PDF manual for the car.

It looks like yellow car on lift means: control of brake lamps, trailer lights or fuel system malfunction.

I can check the brake lights, but was worried about the potential for it to be an HPFP issue. The car ran perfectly, no long crank, no misfire, etc.

Checked my ultragauge, and there are no current or pending codes. There is no CEL, and plenty of power, had the car under boost going up a bridge and it accelerated and ran perfectly.

Should I preemptively just take the car to the dealer, or are there any other thoughts? The fuel isnt terribly old, I use a fuel stabilizer.

Worried about this though. Thoughts?

Thanks!

As my '07 pdf manual also shows that symbol as a general "service due" icon, has it been over a year since your last oil change?

(Sort of grasping at straws - probably best to at least call your dealer's service advisor.)

That light is telling you that your car's service is due. An HPFP failure would not be that icon but you would have a SES (Service Engine Soon light) plus the (!) and maybe the yellow engine symbol light on.

Here is how you can reset that light... or just confirm what it looks like...

Looking through the service manual PDF, it shows two different icons.

Service needed icon is this:

I am seeing the yellow version of this one:

I had an oil change done this summer at the dealer because I had hit one year (did one myself previously but didn't change anything). I assume the dealer logged this.

All the same, the earliest that any service is due per the car computer is 05/2012, ie a few months out... Nothing is due right now. Would they be warning me this far out?

the yellow car on the lift means its due for its vehicle check, which is a glorified inspection process covered under your maint warranty.

In all the years of "CBS" vehicles ( CBS being the system that we now use for maint reminders) I have NEVER seen that description you show from the PDF for that light anywhere else.. ODD???

Then why doesn't the date for the services from that section of my car's computer show a date near today for anything being due?

Because the "Inspection" DriveHard apparently was referring to isn't due until 30,000 miles - and you have only 4,000.

Other possibilities might be a state/local Emissions or Safety inspection, but they would show a date (if appliccable) - and they have different dash icons.

It really sounds like a spurious dash warning.

Yeah, it's weird.

I took a video and put it on YouTube to show what I get. I cycled through the check and service modes...

Please have a watch:

Thanks again!

Apparently it was. Drove to the gym, light was on. Started up to leave the gym, light was off, check ok.

And oddly enough, it came back again this AM.

Nothing wrong, drove about 36 miles at high speeds on the interstate, saw 8 psi boost, cruised smoothly at 33-34MPG.

Yet no service needed until May.

It turned out that it was a bad battery. I swapped a good spare I had, drove it to the dealer, and they installed and coded a new one under warranty.

Seems the battery voltage was getting too low, and it finally was dead with a shorted cell.
