Car Makes 'EEEEEEE' Sound During Harder Acceleration

Wondering if anyone here knows what's going on with my car or has experienced same/similar symptoms...

When I am accelerating harder than normal, my car begins to develop this supercharger-like sound/whine. It literally sounds like 'eeeeeeeeeee'. Once I let off the throttle, it disappears immediately. Again, this only happens when I accelerate harder and is audible with my windows down.

I'm not sure if this is related but my OEM charge pipe blew so I replaced it with a VRSF charge pipe.

Additionally, my 2012 135i with N55 has the PPK and PE. This sound is really making me worry and isn't giving me any confidence in pushing the car hard now... or at least until I figure out what the cause of this sound is.

Boost control solenoid. #2 --> http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E8..._turbo_charger

Or that's my best guess.

Hmmm, would you mind explaining how a boost control solenoid would make these noises? Is this something that is easily replaced or I'll have to bring it in to a shop/dealer since I'm not very mechanically inclined.

Basically unplug the vacuum lines and electrical plug, unbolt it and replace it. Nothing too tough.

There is an internal diaphragm that may be leaking boost past it. It's vibrating in such a way that it makes noise. Think like letting air out of a balloon.

But like I said, it's just my best guess. It's about a $120 trial. Maybe close to same as having a shop diagnose it. If I'm wrong you're out $120 + whatever the diagnosis and fix turns out to be. 100% in your hands.

Alternatively, maybe you can find someone local to swap parts with to test.

Sounds like a boost leak... check the connections on the charge pipe, even if they look tight they could be leaking some air and make a noise like you describe.

The boost solenoid doesn’t have boost going to it on bmws like it does on other turbo cars, only vacuum so that’s probably not the issue.

Check if it's truly hard acceleration or just higher rpm. Try revving up in neutral. If the same sound comes back without being under load it could be a clogged up oil filter.

thanks for all the replies! I'll bring it back to the shop that installed the charge pipe for me and see if they can quickly diagnose the issue. i'll make sure to note to the mechanic the feedback here.

additionally, i just revved my car in neutral and the sound does NOT exist.

Issue resolved!

It was my VRSF charge pipe. One of the metal O ring style brackets to mount the pipe onto the other pipe was loose!
