The Castrol Edge 0W40 is still the good stuff made in Germany. I like the thinner oil at start up. It is physically impossible to be too thin at startup. Even the thinnest 0W is three or four times thicker at startup than even a 60 weight is at operating temp. |

If climate is cool and you don't drive hard, 0W-30 is fine IMHO. I still find that once it warms up the 1M, like most turbo BMWs, runs on the high side of what I'm used to so 0W-40 is great for cold starts and has a little more on the hot end. Part of the reason BMW puts 0W-30 is to increase fuel mileage but 40 should be better for warm protection as shown on the BMW chart I attached.

at my last oil change i supplied my own shell helix 0/40 for the dealer to use,i'm so glad i did this as it's working much better than the old 5/30,my weekly driving is 10 mile daily drive,by the end of the week there would be mayo/sludge on the filler cap, this does not happen on longer journeys so i'm thinking it's because engine is not getting up to optimal temps causing condensation in top of engine, with the 0/40 the engine get's up to temp quicker & no more sludge on the cap,so it's a winner from me

I just called for a quote and it's $9.95 for the 5w-30 and $15.49 for the 0W-40 here in Windsor, Ontario. Damn, that's quite the spread!
I need to investigate these two oils more. I currently put the 5w-30 in my 235i but after seeing this chart, I want to start using the 0w-40. Quote:

So, basically we are being forced to go 30 or go to another brand? Don't know if I like the sound of that...

sounds like it. They released the 0W-40 but never told anyone. My dealer had boxes sitting around not knowing what it was for so it never sold. Terrible marketing. It was sold as an upgrade to for turbo M cars. I only found it by accident when I came up on a european BMW site, then saw it sold in US. You should pick some up while you can. I bought extra stuff. If you want to go 40 weight, I would go with LL-01 Motul 5w-40 or Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 which is Shell OEM and BMW approved. Since you're in Canada and have real winters though, the BMW 0W-40 would be my first choice. Here in San Diego we don't have real winters so I can go 0W-40 or 5W40. I never gets below freezing here. If it gets to 39 F in the winter they call out the national guard and declare it a freeze emergency. : )

In our market, we have a letter from BMW technical stating we must use 0w40 LL01 oil in the S55 and S63 engines, and the N55 motor used in the M2.
Unsure if this is market specific but North America sees temperatures at both ends of the spectrum so i imagine it might be true for NA too |

I have used 0W-40 on my cars since 2009, 09 GTR, 1M, and 2014 Porsche 991,
all using 0W- 40 with no hic-up, Traded in the GTR after 5yrs for the Porsche 911, still have my 1M since new, and the 911. Oil change interval between 5-6k miles, or 5-6 months which ever comes first, my Army moto.. keep it simple and stupid, 1M is 50k miles and the 911 has 25K. Proper oil changes and maintenance is the key. |
