160+
Two weeks ago I went up to Frankfurt airport to pickup my kid from the states. On the way up I got into a fun high-speed blast, doing 160+ mph. Don't really know how high because the speedo was dead at 160.
Wow, was that intense...and of all things against a MB 320 turbo diesel station wagon and this sharp looking newer red Alfa Romero...all of us, back and forth, passing each other......that was intense! I love my 135, but now it seems I need to upgrade my 135 speedo to a 1M speedo to see what this car is really capable of doing. I thought we were limited to 155? Is this from the "M" package? anyone else run above 155? |

Speedo isn't going to be accurate at those speeds, better off using a GPS to tell how fast you're really going. Are you on the stock tires still, going up to a 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 will make a slight difference in top speed. Did you ever hit the governor?

I love Germany and might be there next year for the Auto show. I contacted this guy and he emailed me this info, so here's the resource for you: A 200 mph / 320 km/h speedometer. The price for changing your speedometer is 599,-- Euro + UPS sending-costs. Hereby i send you the design of this scale. It is no problem to do it in an other design (for example without km/h). Than you have tool-costs about 400,-- Euro extra. We need 2 days for the work on your instrument with the design we have and 10 days for an other design, like you want. Best regards J. Man I wish we had an autobahn here in the US. If you get a vbox or gps device that lets you view your speed than that would be even more accurate.

Once you hit the limiter I have noticed that the car will not jerk back like other cars do. You can feel you are hitting the limiter but not like you're riding a wild buck.
The 225/255 setup that ND is talking about makes the handling better and you don't feel like you are riding rails on the runflats.

The speed limiter is a "soft" one. It seems to be speed based rather than rpm based. I have hit it on a light throttle at only 1/3 of a pedal!! Here is a pic I took back in March.
I have read posts where some cars will show 160 mph and some 151mph and everywhere in between. I think it depends on the speedo head and colibration and the tire brand. I know that my car reads 155 mph when it hits the limiter. On my TomTom is reads 240 kph at that same 255kph on the speedo. One thing is for sure... the short wheel base of our 1er's and the (lousy) suspension make for a nervous drive at those speeds. It is NOT confidence inspiring to say the least. Our cars get twitchy after 130 mph. I can feel the car change at 110 mph and up... it could be better engineer'd I think. But by 130 and up you are really paying attenstion and making small corrections in tracking straight ahead. Then again... it wasn't TOO NERVOUS since I was able to take some pics at that speed driving one handed! lol Yes, a V-box would settle what are cars real top speed is. I have heard good things about WSM Tachometerdienst GmbH, in Darmstadt. But there work costs some serious dough over here like all things for these cars. Bring your euro check book, EC card! lol |
