I don't have a 135i but if I did I'm not sure how I'd answer that...
One large glaring fault on an otherwise beautiful car.

This is why I think the problem isn't with the pump, but the engine itself. The cars that have them fail early also seem to have them fail often. My theory is that there's something wrong with the machining of the block, or the drive mechanism that will be difficult and expensive to repair, and that's why BMW is handling it the way they are, and why they haven't been able to correct the problem even though they've gone through several pump revisions trying.

I've been thinking the same.

It seems that once you've had 1 fail you're more likely to have another fail, more so than someone else getting their first.
If this problem were just with the pumps, then we'd be seeing more initial failures rather than more repeat failures.

There has to be something going on with the overall system, and the pump just happens to be the part that then fails, but something else is causing it to do so.

BMW has to be seeing this trend as well, it's too obvious for an engineer not to see this. I hope they figure it out so that the rest of us can know what's up and so the 135i doesn't get a bad reputation for future resale value. This could hurt those who want to sell their 135's a few years from now, and it will hurt BMW trying to sell lease returns, which will start coming in heavy off of 3yr leases in the next 1.5yrs.

I remember the early E46 M3's with their engine problems, and BMW extended the warranty on those engines, but BMW found the problem and could fix it, so it didn't hurt the resale later down the road.
The problem here is that a true fix hasn't been given just the extended warranty

actually it did hurt the e46 m3 resale, the year ones are worth noticeably less used, I sure would not buy one without paperwork showing replacement

The resale is my biggest concern at this point. I've already pretty much decided I'm going to have to get rid of the car because of this issue, but I'm really going to hate the beating I'm going to get at trade in.

When you guys have had your HPFP replaced, has the dealer allowed anyone to keep the part or are they shipped back to BMW for analysis? Tearin' one down could tell volumes about the failure mode.

I'm sure that's more true in certain markets.

I'm almost at 10k and (knock on wood) no issues. Is there anyone at a high mileage who has NOT had to replace the fuel pump?

I would love to know this as well. The nature of the beast is that people only make a thread when there's a problem and never to say "everything is great!"

I'm at 32k mile on the original pump. The problem is, every time I take a long trip I get HPFP failure issues, but it never actually goes completely bad, and the problem never shows up unless I'm more than 2 hours from home.

I'm not sure it's the HPFP, but whatever it is is a pain in my ass. I'm going to buy the BT Scanner in the next few weeks and monitor some stuff on the next trip to try and pin it down.

I don't get it - you say you have HPFP issues, but you're not sure it's the HPFP? Are you getting codes/long cranks?

I meant to say "HPFP failure symptoms" instead of issues.

I don't get long cranks, and I'm not sure if I'm getting the codes. The standard OBDII readers won't pull the BMW specific codes. What I do get is a rough running car that goes into limp mode on the interstate on long trips. When I pull over it will sputter and cough, and seems like it's running rich. Then I turn it off for a few minutes, and it's fine. Sometimes the problem comes back, sometimes it doesn't.

It ONLY happens on long trips, and sometimes not even then, so it's extremely hard to figure out what's actually going on. It did it once when the car was stock, and then stopped. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong with it other than a cylinder 2 misfire. They reset it, and I didn't see it again for months (because I wasn't taking any long trips), so I put an SSTT on. Next trip I made, the car went into limp. I pulled the SSTT off for the trip home, and it did the same thing. Later on I put a JB3 on the car and made a trip to FL and back, as well as a couple of other 7 hour trips with no issues, and I was honestly thinking the problem was gone, until last week when it came back.

As I said earlier I'm going to order a BT scanner before my next trip and try to pin it down, but it acts like the fuel pump when I'm on the highway.

Well, at least if I'm driving to Chicago I'll have my trusty "BMW Service Center" Atlas thoughtfully included in the doc pack if I need it! (laughing nervously)

I am feeling your pain Jeremy

Well I had more problems last night coming home. Had the fuel pump replaced at 17k then at 20k I got limp mode and software update. Now last night I got sputter and limp mode again at 23.5k and I just dropped it off.

I am so pissed off right now I dont know what to say.

I am wondering if its fuel pump, injector, coil pack....all I know is my 328i sedan with no sport package is not cutting it..

Overall I love my 135i but if they dont get this issue squared away I am considering dumping it as well.

Damn that sucks!

This whole thing is just stupid. There's no way in hell this has been going on for 3 years now and BMW still doesn't know how to correct it. There's got to be more to it.

My first pump went out at 8k and as I am approaching 16k it's acting up again. There's some root cause issue BMW is not addressing or hasn't found yet. Because it's odd some owners have multiple replacement yet others have none. Whatever it is I want none of it. Who changes a pump for every oil change? Cost aside, who has time to visit the dealer so often?
