The horror! Rusted to **** axle/ wheel bearing?

Hey all,

I don't know why I've ingnored this for so long but I want to get it sorted. See pics.

Do I just go ahead and do the axle and wheel bearing? Or is this just the bearing? This would be new territory for me. I've got to do the parking brake shoes so I figured I'd try to tackle this too.

So, is it just the wheel bearing or is it both wheel bearing and axle? Should I just bring it to a shop? Are there any non-OEM axles ppl recommend? Like a non BMW stamped OEM equivalent? Trying not to pay the BMW stamp tax if possible.

Peace and love.

OMG!

I cannot even comprehend trying to get that off. I'm so lucky I found an Oklahoma car.

K9leader's axle appeared to be in acceptable condition, but I could recognize the shape of a nut on his. Yours is so far gone I can't even recognize where one ends and the other begins. Once you get it off you'll be able to assess the condition of the axle splines. They're usually pretty stout, but I wouldn't be shocked if you needed a new one/s.

Reminds me of a croissant. Now I'm hungry.

I had the other side done 2 years ago, so thankfully I won't have to do both. I'm still on the fence of whether or not I want to try to do this in my driveway. I was thinking I could probably just chisel that nut off, but I'm afraid I'll get stuck halfway and need a tow to the mechanic anyway.

Thx

Mine were in similar shape when my right half shaft started letting go. I just had my Indy shop do it. Much less headache. It was a total nightmare for them and I'd trust them to do literally anything.

FWIW I've done everything on my car other than the axles and the head job. No way I'd tackle this.

Unless you’re a masochist, this is the type of stuff you should pay with a smile on your face.

She's going to the mechanic.

Thx for all the help and tips!

Btw, the OEM non-BMW stamped part comes from a company called GKM.

Check here for the part from FCP

Awe, I like projects like this, or at least I find them rewarding when I succeed. Now your mechanic gets to have all the fun...

Great opportunity for upgraded shafts. Slap some 1200wtq rated units in there and never worry again.
