I swapped my valve cover gasket to try to fix some smoking in the engine bay, got these:

29F3 Faulty Low Fuel Pressure Sensor
2A87 Outlet-Vanos variable cam control test, mechanics
3100 low boost mode engaged -- CEL displayed

Cleaned the VANOS solenoids to try to fix, swapped intake and exhaust to see if the one was faulty.

Now after that the car went into serious limp (and ran like a tractor) mode and the codes got quite a bit worse:

29F3 Faulty Low Fuel Pressure Sensor
29CD Misfirings, cylinder 1
29D1 Misfirings, cylinder 5
29D0 Misfirings, cylinder 4
2A7C No Description Found
0000 Unknown Fault
0000 Unknown Fault
3100 low boost mode engaged -- CEL displayed

Next steps are to change the oil, new solenoids, replace that sensor and hope.

Just swapped the solenoids, drained the oil and found that. The plastic component fits into the spring, looks slightly chewed up but appears almost completely intact.

Some more pics here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JsV5mUFNkfE4Gtn79

Been pouring over various N54 diagrams and can't find anything like it.

I thought it was the oil bypass but that spring is intact.

Might be something EGR related when I had the valve cover gasket open?

The oil was very clean, no metal flakes or coolant or anything.

What I did find was the top part of the oil filter had come off the rest of the mesh....

Local BMW dealership had no idea, the spring is about 1 inch in length.

Two theories:

Oil pump?
Oil leveling sensor internal parts?

Going to try to pull that sensor tomorrow as the weather is complete shit today.

So by the last pic in the album you figured out what it is?
Oil filter bypass valve.

I'd of had no idea. I haven't done that gasket yet, dealer did for me though.

Kinda curious why it was lying on the splash shield though. Wasn't one in the oil filter housing, or the one in there (one you found) was damaged?

Nope, been having more luck over here: https://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55626

But that is how I pulled it out, it was still intact.

Still super confused as to what it is.
