Introducing - Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Michelin is releasing the Pilot Super Sport this April. It's their newest entry into the Max Performance category and is intended to be a replacement for their Pilot Sport PS2. Maybe the best news, at least for us, is that sizing for the 1series (225/40/18 and 255/35/18) is part of the initial size release. They also plan to release more sizes later in 2011 and 2012.
We will include it in one of our very first tests this spring, but others are already testing it. In the mean time here's some highlights of the PSS from my talks with Michelin representatives: 1. Major increases in the level of dry grip and small increases in wet grip. On a 1-10 scale, Michelin tells me the PSS, on a scale where the PS2 is a 5 and the Pilot Sport Cup is a 10, will come it at somewhere between 8 and 9. The increased grip is due in large part to the dual tread compound design across the asymmetric tread patch and the use of Twaron (aramid fiber) which forces the tire to hold it's shape better and keep a more consistent tread patch on the road. 2. Longer tread wear. That's right, per Michelin, it's going to wear longer and grip much better - two things that usually do not go hand in hand. In fact, Michelin is going to have tread wear warranties of 30K on these tires, where they are being used in a non-staggered set up. Staggered set up rear applications will receive a 15K warranty while the fronts retain 30K. 3. It's lighter. About 10% lighter than the PS2, across the sizing. Pricing? At or below the cost of PS2's. Now that's some value. All in all, a very impressive introduction. I'm very excited to get these on the track so I can get a first hand look at what Michelin is very excited about.

Gill,
Is it an oversight on Michelin's part then that their website shows the PS2 as a "10" handling, with the super sport a "9" handling? |

This is great news and Gill I'd be more than happy to test them here on the autobahn and back roads if you want to send me a set for "testing purposes". I'll return them when I'm done.

http://www.michelinman.com/tire-sele...t/tire-details to be fair, these are both entries that has the same category as the Pilot Sport Cup, which is also shown as a "10", so perhaps the Super Sport was just appropriately adjusted down compared to the Cup, while the PS2 was simply not. |

These are distinctively different tires, coming from separate engineering paths. They use different tread designs, compounding and reinforcements, among other things.
That's not to say there aren't similarities someone could point to, but they are meant to serve two separate niches. Europe will have a shared emphasis on both tires, with a split focus based on high-speed (autobahn style) hydroplaning resistance (PS3) and wear+traction (PSS). North America will focus on the PSS and will only have a handful of OE part numbers in the PS3.

Yes. It looks like the author made some assumptions.
