Not that anyone has commented negatively, but I'd probably say "yeah, I already own a 335 Coupe - what is it you're driving? A Toyota?"

Touche! The overwhelming majority of people that comment about my car drive something...less...than a BMW.

there was a really good video about the 1 series review on youtube. it explained that the car really went back to the roots of bmw by being a smaller more nimble car in fact. the guy doing the review even went as far to say that bmw designed the 1 series to be a car for themselves to drive like its ment to be driven.. fast and around corners..
so why not 3 series and not 1.. cause this exactly. bmw went back to what they know.. smaller cars. 3 series and all other models have gotten way bigger over the years.. 1 series was to take a step back from that and make a really great car to drive just like the 2002 was..

Yeah, I was surprised how much attention my 135 drew in Germany when I picked it up on Euro Delivery back in the Spring of 2008. Many compliments, smiles, and thumbs up. With the 1 series being around for a few years prior, I did not expect that.

I believe imported cars in Australia carry additional import fees/duties along with taxes thereby increasing the price. Some of the performance oriented 'domestics' carry a more reasonable price tag:

Holden Commodore SV6 starting at $36,990 AUD http://www.holden.com.au/vehicles/commodore/sv6

There are also the Commodore SS and SS V-Series that cost a bit more. http://www.holden.com.au/vehicles/commodore#/overview

There are also the Ford Falcon XR models which I think are in the $35,000 - $45,000 AUD range. I know the Holdens and Fords aren't directly comparable to a 135, but it shows that not all cars in Australia are outrageously expensive.

I would say "Because everyone and their mother has a 3-series and I wanted something different" Plus why pay more for the slower car!

I got that a few times in the beginning...

Once a guy asked me if it was a M3... I told him it was a 135i. He seemed confused. Then he asked how much do they cost... I told him around 40k. He continues to ask why not just get a 335i then.

I asked him what he drove. He told me an Altima. I said they are nice cars.... I rented one once from Enterprise, they were all out of Maximas.

I smiled and got in my car.

True, but you can't tell me that there are $159,000 in taxes on an $80,000 car.

LCT or Luxury Car Tax in Australia is 33% of a car's value above $57,009. (Don't ask me why they picked that number)

Therefore, to use the Porsche 911 Carrera from the previous example the LCT component of that $237,816 is $54207.90

That leaves over $100,000 to be accounted for.

If the car was selling here for $79,000 it would still attract the LCT but that would only be $6563.10 making the total cost $85,563.10

Now don't get me wrong, I'm aware that there are other figures involved. The AUS price also includes Dealer Delivery, Stamp Duty, Sales Tax etc whereas (to my knowledge) the US price is MSRP so you still have to add all that on but there's still a rather massive discrepancy.

Even taking into account the greed that that Australian Government are exhibiting here with the LCT you have to admit that Porsche are basically charging Australian buyers for 2 cars and delivering 1.

The issue that I have is that the only cars in Australia that are priced comparably with EU/UK/US pricing are the two domestic brands you've mentioned and dodgy crap-box cars from the Pacific Rim.

Good point about the 911. I wasn't sure how the taxes and fees added up, but there is definitely some price gouging or just plain greed going on with the price of the Porsche. Of course, Porsche is known for charging outrageous amounts on options and even charges extra for European Delivery while BMW and Audi offer a discount when you opt for ED. How is the Nissan GT-R priced over there? In the US, it starts at $89,950 which doesn't include taxes and registration.

That is rough that every import aside from the econo-boxes is priced so high. I don't know how I would handle that.

Cost are relative to average incomes.

Seems the cost of cars in Aus is higher in Aus even adjusted for average or median income.
But that is attributable to a number of factors; population size (number of potential buyers), the fact that Aus is out in the Pacific and transport costs could be a lot higher, as well as the cost of getting replacement/repair parts, etc...

From the avg/median income numbers I've seen, when described in US dollars, the income number is about the same.
It's just that the number given in US vs Aus numbers is different.
So, in Aus the avg could be about $60k in Aus dollars, and $40k in US dollars.
Avg US incomes about $40k in US dollars and $60k in Aus dollars.

Prices of products will reflect that numerical difference as well.
So if a US citizen were to take $40K in US dollars to Aus, they would be able to buy $60k worth of product in Aus dollars.

These are crude numbers used just for example.
If anyone wants the actual dollar amounts do some surfing, there is a lot of info available.

We were still paying more than the US when our average income was lower and our dollar was worse. This would suggest that this is being used more as an excuse to inflate prices than a real world cause.

I can understand the "Australia is a small remote market" attitude but when you try to tell me that it costs an extra $100,000 to supply a 911 to an Aussie buyer I'm going to call "bullshit"...

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. With our dollars so close at the moment the numerical difference based on which currency is used as a measure would be negligible. I may have misunderstood your point though.

This kind of thinking was understandable several ago when the US dollar was stronger but now that the Australian dollar is worth more than the USD it gets a little difficult to swallow.

In actuality, if an American was to bring $60,000 USD to Australia they would be able to purchase much less "product" than they could in the US. The Australian Dollar is stronger so you would have less that $60,000 AUD and Goods and Services are priced higher here so you would be getting less value for your money.

I am also aware that it takes quite some time (sometimes years) for domestic pricing on imported goods to adjust for differences in international monetary values.

At the end of the day we are being gouged and there is nothing we can do about it. Our government certainly doesn't seem to care - in fact they just take advantage of it by adding more/ridiculous taxes on top of already overinflated import prices.

I still wouldn't choose to live anywhere else though

He's just jealous because your lowly 1-series is essentially the newer version of his 330Ci, in terms of size and power, that is. One might respond to his comment with something like, "What, couldn't afford a BMW that isn't less than 5 years old?"
