Interesting - but us Aussies also need to keep in mind that LL01 is the full-approved oil for use here, not LL04. LL04 is for emergency refill only.

Blimey - Who'd have thought fuel pumps were lubricated with sump oil. One lives and learns!

BMWAUS cannot offer an explanation other than some mumbling and insincere apologies, so it MUST BE THE ALDI ENGINE OIL.

I've had one pump failure so I should switch to Aldi before warranty expires to get a new pump.

The Castrol oil is good stuff! I knew I wasn't crazy when I noticed cooler temps and less noise on cold starts.

I use BMW oil filters from my local dealer. They cost me ten euros or about $13 USd for one. The filter comes with the two o-rings and a drain plug washer.

I did buy two Mahle oil filters at my local indi parts place. They are cheaper at 8 euros each. The first one I bought (in the middle of the photo bellow!) was kind of cheasy. So I did not use it. The second Mahle one - I bought at the same indo parts store( a few montsh later) looked better(far right in the photo). I will use these filters at some point.

Only in the land of the free and brave. Down under we've got the standard 3 years.

I have signed up with Supercheap Auto so whenever this item goes on special I get an email. It's quite handy. I've switched between Shell and Castrol Edge and I feel like my N54 runs a lot harder with Castrol. Shell happens to cost a lot more too Let me know what Mobil 1 is like.

BMW 135i RECOMMENDED OILS FOR AUS : LL-01 & LL-04

one of the things to remember is that we have very high sulphur fuels here in australia and bmw recommend/prefer LL-01 oils (in Australia) and LL-04 as secondary.

whereas in europe it is the opposite.

interesting is that if you look at the specs for Bmw LL-01 approved oils they usually have a higher Total Base Number (TBN) which is higher then BMW LL-04 approved oils.

if you google Total Base Number you will see the benefits for our engines in higher total base numbers.

also good synthetic oil (either LL-01 or LL-04 do a good job) and regular oil & filter changes will prevent "wear and tear" on any engine/machinery .

also if you compare say Mobil 1 0-40W and Castrol Syntron 0-40w (using the specs provided by the respective oil companies) mobil 1 is a better oil (higher TBN). but both are very good products !

cheers

Oil

I went through all this when I first started changing my own oil and had a hard time deciding between the two commonly recommended Castrol products.

The way I rationalized it was as follows:

1) The majority of engine wear occurs on startup.

2) First number in the grade represents oil viscosity when the oil is cold - the lower the number, the less viscous.

3) low viscosity at startup is a good thing but only to a certain limit. If the oil is too thin, it will drain down from the critical surfaces while the car is resting overnight to a greater extent than a thicker oil would do.

4) given that I live in Brisbane and my car is garaged overnight, my oil is never likely to be less than about 18 deg. For this reason, I am happy to use 5wt oil, especially in summer.

5) if I lived somewhere like Canberra and regularly parked my car outdoors overnight in winter, I'd have chosen a 0wt oil.

6) I use Castrol Edge 5w-30.

Feel free to pick apart my logic. I'm not an engineer and if someone can see a problem with my logic, I'd be happy to hear it.

Some really good points there Caduceus. I chose to go with Castrol Edge 5W-30 for the same reasons. It was also cheaper and felt better on my butt dyno too. My dealership uses Shell 5W-30 though.

Which other oils have you tried on the N54?

Sorry, I revised my lower overnight temp to 18 deg, not 10. My garage is under the insulated roof line of my house so it doesn't get that cold. By the time I've started her up and backed out of the driveway, the oil would be above that temp anyway; even if the air temp is in the single digits, which as you know, is rare for Brissie.

Devastated I stocked up on the old stuff

It says LL01 on the bottle, not sure of the viscosity.
