Yeah it's definitely fine. It's BMW LL-01 approved so it's ok. I actually did an engine oil and filter change yesterday and went from BMW 5W-30 to Castrol Edge 0W-40.

Runs nice and smooth when the engine's cold and it's nice and smooth when warmed up too. It might be thicker at normal operating temperatures compared to the 5W-30 but if you're tracking often it's probably the better option.

I just had a read of bobis forums more than anything - there's a lot on e85 and oil, people using various redline's, motul 300v's, and the analyses all came back acceptable, just like running unleaded

I couldn't find any analysis' showing e85 having a large negative effect, but a LOT of talk of it being a thing

I switched over to Castrol Edge 0W40 A3/B4 (LL01 rated) on the first oil change at 3000km in my N55. The difference in specs between 0W40 and 5W30 is small and it appears on the approved oil list for my car.

Just picked up a used 135i and plan on changing the engine oil and brake fluid this weekend.

Might pass the coolant change to a workshop, sounds like a pain.

few BITOG/evom/SAU etc. threads have done a ton of UOA's on oil that's been used with E85 for 9-10kkm and haven't found any further breakdown/loss in viscosity etc. of just about any brand/weight high quality synth oil - a lot of TALK about needing special oils from the last few years.

you'll have your oil smelling like whatever fuel you use anyway?

sorry i read around the internet a bit more, as well as, yes, that post... other results (BITOG included) said the same thing when they contacted the manufacturer, but when UOA's came back of 300v it showed no ill effects from the E85 in terms of deposits or fuel in the oil (roughly the same % of E85 found in the fuel as 98RON in prior tests)

Any oil with ESTER will turn to jelly when you use E85 I have seen this happen with 300V, best to use a synthetic fortified oil as recommend by Motul.
We have built many race cars in the last 5+years that only use E85 so what I know about this issue is from the real world.

i get that 300v and redlines ester stock mainly? - but as long as it has decent amounts of acid neutralizing detergents - not all are the same, obviously, in terms of additive packages - there's a lot of different versions of 300V

5 UOA's.. on mobil 1, redline (which is something like 80% ester based but has an appropriate detergent package apparently) and 300v - not sure if you can view without signign up though

ethanol produces a ton of acid as a combustion byproduct, if you have an oil that doesn't counteract this, then, yeah, the oil wouldn't last? regardless of dino or base IV/V synthetic.

another good thread saying basically the same thing

just change it every couple of trackdays like you would anyway, or 5000 street km... and or conduct UOA's regularly, because they're cheap, and can save your engine.. wouldn't that be the best suggestion?

ED: another (VOA this time) http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=2107073 for 300v showing it should be pretty solid for E85 use. higher TBN than redline by a decent amount.

I like redline so far though on all my other engines, so i'll give a higher weight one a go wih the E85 and get a few UOA's done to make sure.
