Stiff steering wheel

Has anyone else noticed that the steering seems a little too stiff? It feels great at higher speeds, a sense of more control, but at lower speeds its almost a chore to turn?

same! Driving a loaner corolla I kept thinking it was going to fall off. It was sooo loose and wobbly compared to mine.

^ I agree 100%! I had to drive a Nissan Yaris S as a loaner for awhile, and man that steering was so loose, you can literally steer that thing with 1 finger!

My wife had to get used to the steering wheel as well, but after a year, no complaints!

Agreed! When I had my fox incident 2 years ago, I was given a Mercedes C220 diesel (in Germany) as a rental, I absolutely HATED the steering. Besides the fact that the wheel itself was super skinny compared to the 1er, the steering itself was soooo numb. It felt like I had to spin the wheel for days just to get the car to turn. Same thing with the Dodge Avenger rental I had recently when my car was back in the shop. I think the 1er's steering is perfect.

I too thought the steering a bit on the stiff side at low speeds when I first got the car but I've gotten used to it and don't really notice it anymore. What I do notice is how loose the electronic steering on our A3 now feels. I now much prefer the 1er's steering.

I do prefer a slightly lighter feel. The M3 is perfect for that - variable assist so it's light in parking lots and heavier at speed.

My s2k is extremely direct, but is still easier to turn than the 135i.

Still, love the wheel, and the steering is very communicative.

It's probably my favorite part of the car, I love the heavy steering, I've driven a Mercedes-Benz S450 and you can literally throw the wheel around, the crisp handling the 1 has makes it fun and connected IMO

Actually light steering feel is one thing I'm worried about - coming out of my ZHP I'm concerned the e82 will be too light for my taste. ZHP's steering was perfectly weighted for me. Test drive of the e82 was good, but a test drive isn't the same as living with the car. Sounds here like the steering is still heavy and substantive.

+2. I love my "stiffy"!

Btw... OP if you want a lighter steering feel... you should go drive a 1M/M3. That was one thing I really did not like at the M's compared to our 1er's.

It's not that I necessarily want a "lighter" steering wheel, it's just that I've recently injured my shoulder and noticed how hard it was to steer at low speeds.

My old S2000 had Electronic Power Steering that was controlled differently at different speeds. Some sort of system like that would be nice to have.

Older BMWs have always had stiff steering wheels, I always remember me noticing it the first time I drove my E30.
