1er Quality Concerns

I have been reading the babybmw.net forums lately, and the other 1 series models seem to suffer from a lot of little problems. What do you peeps think?

If you've researched cars in other open online forums/blogs like this, here's what you'll find. Eventually, after the car is released, the complaint section starts up. Some problems are legitimate, some are nitpicking, some will be unique to a specific car or caused by the owners abuse/carelessness, but all cars will have problems.

I participate in a vwvortex forum and we get TSBs on quality issues from other contributors, I'm sure we'll see the same thing here. I don't expect the 1 series to be worse than any other BMW.

I would expect minor problems in the first year release of any car, regardless of the manufacturer. It is always best to get a car in the second year of production IMO.

I agree even though I currently own a '06 330i (1st yr. production). Of course my '93 325i (2nd yr), '99 Z3 (3rd yr), and '01 330Ci (2nd yr) were loaded with various issues.

Edit: I should mention that the '06 330 has had zero warranty claims. Knock on wood...

I can say that my 8/00 production 330ci had WAY more issues then my current 05 M3. Things do get better some times.

Also keep in mind that whenever you are looking at stuff like internet forums where people post voluntarily, you will get a sampling bias almost always leaning towards the negative. Ie; people who have problems with their car are usually more vocal than people who are happy with their car…
I’ve had a 2003 GTI and an ‘07 GLI and people warned me about issues with VWs, but my experience with them was pretty good and far from what some people warned me about.

Keep in mind it's part of the European car experience.

Also, from reading about used 1ers in UK mags, some of the issues have reportedly been addressed with the refreshed car for '08.

It HAS to be better than my A4, almost nothing in the interior works now (glove box doesn't close, cup holder, lights...)

I'm seriously thinking about trading in my VW, but unlike the lucky GLI owner my 06 GTI has had every problem imaginable. I'd read of a new problem on vwvortex and a week later I had it. Never anything major but my local VW service department is so bad (and slow) I just wished I would have never bought it.

That why I'm thinking of getting a 1er. Even if it has issues I'm assuming that BMW's service department must be better.

I suspect you meant that tongue in cheek, but I actually think you're right on. Almost every issue I had with my ZHP had to do with buginess, mainly, the ECU, 4,000 RPM flat spot, dying at idle, the door locks/remote key.

In other words, bugs, not primary mechanical quality issues.

The only real non electronic problem with the car was the rattling stereo speakers, but BMW stereos have always been crap, so I shouldn't have been that surprised.

Agreed.. Service pack 1..
I prefer to wait for refresh myself, but that might be taking too far for many..
I bet 1 refresh will fix the looks a lot..

That sucks... I'm sorry to hear that your GTI was more than a little "buggy", unlucky I guess. Anyways, the only problem I ever had was the fuel evap sensor/gas cap sensor. Its a little too sensitive and always causes a fault.

Anyways, sold my GLI a couple days ago in anticipation of the 135, so now the real wait begins...

Um, has any car maker yet made a car that was 100% perfect and had 0 problems or bugs? Not just on one car, but for a whole lifecycle of whatever certain car you want to talk about? no

At least with BMW they treat you like a king when you roll in for service.......and roll out in a free loaner for the day...

The only issues I've had with my ZHP have been "bugs" like people stated earlier. She's never left me stranded, she's never had any critial components replaced, and UNLIKE my Nissan Titan that I paid MORE for, she's never once made me feel unsafe driving down the road...

I had an early Titan that had the dreaded "too small for a big truck and always warping" front brake issue. Nothing like emergency braking at highway speeds and saying a prayer that the wheel doesnt jerk out of your hand and go wherever it wants too...

Where'd the ZHP's go? That's an option package BMW should offer on all their stuff.

I agree..... but;
It's usually something they throw in part way through the life cycle to keep things fresh...

This is my first post, but I've been lurking on this and other 1-series sites for quite a while. At this point, the one issue that probably concerns me the most is that I've seen many complaints about creaks, rattle, or squeak noises from the doors. Something to do with the door seals or how the doors fit against the body. BMW made some updates to the door seals on the 1-series, but some owners say that was not a permanent fix. Just hoping this problem gets nailed down before the car comes to the US.

I know this is an "entry level" BMW but I'd still be very disappointed if it's prone to rattles & squeaks. If that's the case I might as well get a C6.
