"Is the 3 still the benchmark poll"
For nearly three decades, the BMW 3 Series has been the sports sedan by which all others have been judged. Now, with greater power and performance, enhanced luxury and safety feartures, the all-new BMW3 Series proves itself worthy of remaining "the benchmark."

This must be an old advertising quote. BMW is still the benchmark but it has beens so since arguably 1968 or so when the term was coined by a respected member of the motoring press to describe the 2002. Only now are other manufacturers and importers beginning to mount serious challenges, most notably Audi and Infinity.

I think it still is. The press thinks it still is. And the competition thinks it still is. I just hope BMW does not think so... the competition is making great strides and BMW needs to work hard to stay ahead. You don't get to rest on your laurels in the auto industry.

What kind of a self-congratulatory circle jerk thread is this?
You really think a significant number of people participating in a forum about the new 3 series, many of whom have paid money to own one, are gonna vote no? |

It still is, but the competition is creeping UP..
Next year will be a big battle.. Intro of 335.. 3.5 I6, or turbo.. (or both. would be nuts to have 3,5 inline turbo, and probably wont happen). Lexus IS500 (and possibly coupe). Possibly IS350 with stick shift.. April, 2006 - NYIAS - Intro of redesigned G35. Maybe (huge maybe) Acura will release TL with AWD and more power, but nothing is confirmed now.. |

You're point is valid though. But I'm sensing a little less Zen and a little more Driver these days. Yeah, I'm one to talk.

If it weren't the perceived benchmark by the public, then every other manufacturer (e.g., Lexus and Infiniti, both of whom use the number "3" in their models' names) wouldn't be trying to emulate it in one way or another.

I test drove the competion. The Lexus IS is good attempt, but it is clearly inferior.

As long as we are in the 90 percentile, there should be nothing to worry about. Thank you for voting in this poll, members of E90Post.com, I shake you warmly by the hand.
