the fact is 47 and 89 are not taken, but I believe and seem to remember that those letter designations are nothing more than assigned production codes. Maybe someone else can better clarify or disprove my thoughts.

And those are production model codes, I'm pretty sure BMW has other projects (concepts and whatnot). |

If we look at that chart, we can see that numbers from the 60s to the 80s are taken by 5 series, 6 series, X5, 1 series. Perhaps there would be an interference between codes, had the E46 been upgraded to, say, E56. Being that the new 5 series is E60, I'm guessing the older ones were in the 50s (not sure about that...if someone can look that up). Also, they had to account for other models, like the wagon and coupe (E91, E92). So I'm guessing the only free numbers were starting at 90.

The Fleet Colonel has the down low on this subject as well. Nice to know indeed.

What's up with the future "F" designations? Is BMW just systematically moving down the alphabet? I see the next 5 Series is dubbed the 'F10'. Hope I can afford one of those next time around instead of the 3.... |

1. the next generations of Z4 and X3 maintain the same model designation 2. it points out ‘possible project’ countless times but ignores confirmed cars like the e61 M5 3. it’s in English (I would have thought the secret documents out of Munich would be in german) That being said, I wouldn’t put money on new F code designations just yet. |

1. BMW used to use extentions to indicate different variants of a chassis (E46/2C is the E46 3er Cabriolet, etc), but they stopped doing it in the late 90's. Since then every body style, every prototype or even every design study got an internal codename. That's why the numbers have been used up so quickly over the past few years. (I believe development projects for Rover also took a few numbers)
2. They certainly cannot start from E1 again (which was a 1991 project. the system actually started from E3) the same way we can't live in 1991 twice. Codes E100 -130ish have been used in the 60's (E100 being the infamous Isetta). So you will have cars and projects from the past inbetween current developments, which obviously doesn't make sense. And apparently going to E2xx is too far for the Germans. 3. The use of F codes was decided the same time they dropped the E code + extention method, so no need to doubt it. |

There are some numbers that were used by cancelled projects and studies. Some had prototypes built, some didn't even get to that far. For instance, there were E39-based coupe projects and E46-based FWD projects for Rover which were never known to the general public. Here are some interesting ones: E40: the first E36 3er replacement project started in mid-90's. E44: a unknown van project, which is being revived as E99 as we speek. E47: top-secret project nobody knows yet. Rumor has it that it was for Rolls Royce. E51: abandoned V12 supercar project. E55: longer and larger X5 study before the actual X5's launch. E56: FWD plattform study that has been going on for while (still not stopped). E59: AVH's Z9 concept which became the E63 6er. |

yep, they've certainly used up quite a few e-codes with prototypes and concepts.
looks like we're the last of the e's!

The one thats most intriguing to me, is the F?-Space car? That sounds like they are either trying to build a space shuttle type car or a flying car which either way would be just weird but hey it could be the future of travel so its good to see BMW is one step ahead lol
