Good insight there Perhaps the 327 you got was a transition kit. They may have printed a big batch of 327 labels and are finishing them off?

Both filters look exactly the same to me.

I have bought some "aftermarket" oil filters for the 135i, that I have been meaning to post. Some of the cheap aftermarket filter elements look scary! I will shoot some pics this week and make a new thread.

I've bought a few Mexican made Mann HU 816's and they did look different than the German made ones. The glue on the ends looked different and so did the filter media. However, they were pretty much the same after use, so I'm not sure it made any difference, though I did not use them for 10-15,000 miles.

Mexican made ones?
Hmmm show us the difference!

The microfilters on F15 and E70 are made in Mexico.
The LCI F25 with B47 engine has a Fram engine air filter.. cue the Fram haters!

I wish I could, but I've used all I had. They are sold by Advance Auto Parts. I'll try to remember to take a photo of the next one I buy. I guess I should get a BMW brand filter as well, so you can see them side-by-side. Could have just been the batch I had was just different.

By the way, Fram Ultras are excellent oil filters and all I buy for my Honda and Acura.

You get what you pay for - FRAM

The issue with the Fram filters is their sealing gasket; its a simple mostly square ring and it does not lock well onto the filter. You can easily pull it off with your fingers. What has happened is someone removed it for an oil change and did not notice that the sealing gasket came off the filter and staying stuck to the engine. Put on a new Fram and now has 2 sealing gaskets there-it just doesn't work and had a massive oil leak. This was recognized by Honda in the early 1980's. Now BMW (& Toyota-maybe others) are using an "element" that goes inside a permanent oil filter housing and we all know how well this is working out. Anyways, I try to use OE filters as much as possible but will consider Fram for my not so important car.

Not sure how operator error is Fram's fault here. I would not buy their cartridge filters, but they make the best spin-on filter out there (even better yet you can get them for ~$7-8).

These all look the same. Must have just been a different batch I picked up then. The glue looked different on my filters (hard to describe, but more opaque) and the filter paper was darker.

Well... I finally got around to photographing my oil filter "collection". Nothing scientific... I just find it interesting how much the design of an oil filter can be/change - do to price.

The only really cheap looking(and feeling) filter is the Wix. The two BMW dealer bought filters are identical as far as I can tell. Sometimes in the past the Mahle filter design has changed from what the BMW or Mann filters look like to the current one in these photos.

Just to be clear... I've only used BMW dealer filters and the occasional Mahle(twice I think) filters in my 135i. I prefer the BMW dealer filters though.

Dack...

I think Mann makes both the Bosch and BMW filters, so that would explain their similarities.

This is an excellent post for comparing the filters. I would have no issues running the Mahle filter, but not sure about the Wix.

Yeah, I agree. I only bought the WIX filter because I wanted to see how bad they would make a filter. lol

For how readily available they are, I see no reason to use anything other than the Mann filters.

Where do you buy yours from? Online ?

I normally pay 9 euros for my BMW filters from my dealer IF I am using a VAT form for no 19% German sales tax. Regular price is 14 euros, with VAT and not discounted.

The Mann Filter HU 816 X (Oelfilter) is about 10 euros on Amazon.de here.

Agreed. Fram actually makes the OE Honda filter, but does not use a square gasket, instead the proper rounded gasket. The square gasket is much more likely to leak. The Fram branded filters come with the much cheaper square gasket.

Just because it is made by the same company, does not mean it is made to the same quality.

PA and AL- stands for plastic or aluminum. Meaning if you're car has a plastic oil filter housing or an aluminum one.

Some N20 engines run a plastic oil filter housing. The oil filter has a rubber piece attached to the filter. The cap o-ring is much thicker too.

Having seen multiple techs I work next to not pay attention and toss the wrong filter and gasket on a plastic housing, let me tell you, it's not pretty. It pisses oil real quick.

Hope this helps.

I agree, this is a very informative post and it's fun looking at the differences in the filters for example.

MANN owns WIX. I used to run WIX filters in my Jeeps, they were my favorite made in the USA. I recently picked up a WIX and MANN cabin filter off Amazon and in my opinion I like the WIX design better than the MANN because it has a outer foam seal, pretty sure it said it was made in Germany on the box. After doing some research I realized MANN+HUMMEL bought WIX and they have factories all over the world, from North Carolina to Germany and even China!

Ludwigsburg (Germany), May 4, 2016 – MANN+HUMMEL today announced that they have finalized their acquisition of the global filtration operations of Affinia Group, manufacturer of the WIX and FILTRON brand of filters.

I just bought a bunch of Japanese made genuine Honda filters. The label on the box even states to make sure the old gasket is removed.

Hopefully Mann's acquisition of Wix doesn't lead to poorer quality filters sold as Mann Filters.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the my idiot question. Where do you add the oil?

Last night got a message that my oil level is at minimum. The oil was changed in February. The message says to add 1 quart. In the Owner manual say to add withing 125 miles. To today will be be like 60 miles since the message, so need to add ASAP i guess.

Will the oil level automatically calibrate after adding oil? Anything special?

Thanks,
