Amount of fluids?
I want to change my transmission and differential fluids. How much quantity do I need for each of these? (Like 1 or 2 Liters?) Please help - Thanks!

Engine holds 6.5 liters or 6.9 quarts of oil when changing the oil filter. BMW specs: any motor oil that has a LL-1 (Long Life 1) rating on it. 0w30, 0w40, 5w30, 5w40 motor oil.
Manual trans holds 2.1 liters of trans oil. You basically just keep adding fluid until it starts to spill out of the "fill hole" on the side of the trans. BMW specs: MTF-LT-3 Rear diff holds 1.2 liters of fluid. BMW specs: Castrol SAF-XJ For the manual trans I use Redline ATF-D4 and for the trans I use Castrol SAF-XJ. And I thought Castrol SAF-XJ was for M car differentials because they have an LSD.

You think I would be fine using that in the diff as well? Because everyone seems to run the 75W90 or 75W140 GL-5 gear oil?

^^I think RedLine's 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil - is a good oil for the diff. But I am using Castrol SAF-XJ at the moment. What did RedLine say? I am using this RedLine 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil in my "other" BMW. In my old e39 535i V8. I have put almost 100K kms on the car using this RL diff oil(of course I have changed it a few times every 40K kms or so). Dack

There is another Castrol gear oil that can be used in our cars(non M models), I think it is SAF-XO (?) but I am not 100% on this. I know there is another oil. But frankly the Redline oils are very good oils - and I would loose no sleep running any of them in my car.

Thanks man. I think I am going with MTL 75w80 for the trans and 75w140 for the diff as it's similar to the Castrol SAF-XJ.

One final question. I don't really live in cold weather, would I be better off getting the D4-ATF or MTL 75w80 for the trans? The Redline MTL seems similar in spec to the BMW MTF-LT-3

I prefer the D4-ATF over MTL. I have been using the D4 for years in my (various)BMW's so thats why I run it.

Has anyone used the Mobil1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-140 for the diff? 2 quarts should cover it correct?
I am looking to change all the fluids in my 6MT n54 given I'm around 60k miles and read on some other sites that people like the M1. Given it's available locally and have had great experience with Mobil1 engine oils/filters, I was thinking of giving it a go. Thanks. |
