Muffler Delete = Whistle Tips?

I'm so confused WTF is going on...lol

So, I got my muffler delete and a pipe fabricated in place. The welds are awesome and the work is top notch.

It is a 2.5" pipe going to exhaust tips that are dual, 2" ID pipes.

However, under full load acceleration I get this.

Thoughts? So I just need to go to a single outlet in this case?

Whistle happens above 6k.

Wooo Woooo

Try JB weld on the welds - its suppose to handle 300C deg

Otherwise try Oval Tip

Or add material in between the Y to make the separation longer. Experiment with Ply wood...?

2" ID pipes is way too small. That's what causing your whistle. Isn't stock 128i exhaust 2.5 inches ?

I know on my 135i the exhaust is 68mm to 73mm thats about 2.7 inches.

Okay well I re-measured and it is actually 2.25" (the OD is 3")

This matches up the same with OEM Tips, which now begs the question...what changed?

The tips or pipe are picking up some sonic vibrations....can't tell, but do the tips have outer heat shields? Also, if your straight pipe is stainless, this could be the cause....I used a fairly heavy aluminized steel pipe and shielded dual tips.

Are you saying the sound dampening/vibrations characteristics are better with plain carbon steel compared to stainless steel? Or are you saying you used a thicker walled steel pipe versus a thinner walled stainless pipe?

I don't know what pipe he's using....but I'm using very sturdy aluminized steel and tips that have heat shields, and mine sounds like his without the whistling.....

Back in my IMSA RX-7 days, we used headers that were 1/4" thick...anything less would eventually crack from fatigue....we were sure it was from sonic vibrations....Mazda's competition director confirmed this.

I understand what you are saying now, since it was confusing me before. Thicker walled pipe, regardless of being stainless or aluminized plain carbon steel, is most likely the solution, if you have the same set-up and not the same problem.

I know you said the welds looked solid but have you checked at all for exhaust leaks? They can still occur even with some of the best welds.

You can just mix a little soap and water in a spray bottle then spray the newer welds. After you start the car go back and check for bubbles.

Funny but true story about Bubb Rubb. I used to be a member on a So Cal car enthusiast site, and when this video became all the internet rage, one of the board members actually tracked down Bubb Rubb with the intention to market him. They started off selling T-shirts with Bubb Rubb making that face with the "whoo whoo". According to him, they were doing pretty well for a bit, but then Bubb Rubb got the idea that the board member was taking too much money, and ripping Bubb off. Bubb demanded a higher portion of the profits (we're talking about T-shirts here people), and since the board member was operating on a razor thin budget regardless, him and Bubb had to part ways.

Oh what could have been!

Yea, I guess you can call it an outer heat shield.

Tips look just like this basically:

Yes, the pipe is stainless steel.
