Formula E

So I went to my first Formula E race a few weeks back and was thoroughly impressed with the technology that goes into these cars. What a great experience at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. BMW does a lot of genreral sponsorship, most noticeable with the i8 safety cars, but does not sponsor a team which surprised me.

Absolutely ... I commented about the same thing during the replay of the Berlin race. It's crazy that the technology is moving with such leaps and bounds to now have legitimate race cars (enough to be televised). Plus they look wicked.

But still ... I don't think I'll be more than a casual viewer.

I generally feel the same, but since the company that's I work for is a sponsor, I'm following it much more closely. I will be planning to head the the championship race in Montreal.

how long do these cars stay on the race track before having to make a pit stop for a recharge?

The batteries take about 6 to 8 hours to fully charge so the drivers actually change cars somewhere at the halfway point of the race. It's around 30 minutes of racing when they need to change cars. The cars are also able to regenerate power to charge the battery when they break or decelerate.

Totally understand where you're coming from. Plus the sound from the cars don't really do it justice ... they sound like giant RC cars.

Although I do enjoy "drive-by" viewing of Formula E .... I doubt I will really bother watching anything but their "street" races. But I'm the same way about Indy Car races ... outside of the Indy 500 ... I don't bother watching any other oval track Indy races.

Actually, autonomous robot driven battery powered cars are already a reality. They do demonstrations on each ePrix race day.
