iPhone 3GS charging problems

I just bought a new iphone 3GS to replace me 1st gen iPhone. My 1st gen iPhone had no issues with charging or playback of music with my 09 135i (includes the smart phone integration). So when I upgraded to the 3GS it would charge it intermittently when I plugged it in. I read here that it would charge or not charge your phone but with mine it would only charge when it wants too. I tried cleaning the y cable plug too and no luck. I also have issues with the music play back after answering a phone call on the hands free. Sometimes the music doesn't playback after the call and I would have to manually start the music again on my idrive.

anyone else experiencing this problem?

I also have the iPhone GS, but I do not use the Y-cable for charging but the iPhone adapter that goes in console armrest: charges well and ties into the car's shark-fin antenna for really amazing call clarity.

I am thinking about the iPhone dock in the armrest but I would like to find out what my problem with the 3Gs and my y cable is first. Anyone else with this similar problem?
