Help! Cluster Freaking out, throwing codes and now car hesitates when starting
the past couple days have been going from bad to worse for me. Initially my cluster gauge needles were going crazy. Either not turning on or bouncing erratically. The ABS, DTC, Red Brake light, Service lights etc would also go off as well. I did a little research and it seemed like the battery could be the issue so i ended up replacing it with an Odyssey AGM battery. Registered it, cleared codes and fired up the car. Drove it a few miles and Initially it seemed like the issue was resolved. Parked the car for the night. Early the next morning fired up the car and it hesitated. Took at least 3-5 seconds to fire up..this time around a yellow brake light and I-drive malfunction symbol came up. When i got to work checked brake reservoir and brake fluid was at max. Few hours later took my lunch break and tried to fire her up and still the long hesitation. Aside from the codes and hesitation etc driving her seems normal.
Here are the codes i pulled up using bmwCarly: Fault Report - BMWhat - Version: 17.49 FV ID1: c0bc5132-7a14-4668-8953-c0d8c938e782-856 ID2: 2f4d5ea6-601a-48db-b25c-cd203ea63352-cf6-4585 INFO: 060CD5C4B3AF9288726853433323 Base: E82 Build-Year: 2009 Faults: 18 ECUs: 9 Filter: just found Model: 135 i alle/all (MotorID=86, Parameter=89) Battery: 11.7V Normal communication Normal connection normal B 2 Date: 2015-08-05 12:38:21 OBDII Version: 19 Device: >samsung< >kltetmo< >SM-G900T< Motor Control: Engine / Motor Fault: Message (cluster state) Code: CDA8 Fault: Control terminal 15 Code: 2DC3 Fault: Message (terminal status, 130) Code: CDA0 Fault: Message (outdoor temperature) Code: CD94 ABS / DSC / Brake: Airbag: Airbag Fault: Passenger airbag off light POL Code: 93D2 Fault: General Bus Wiring error Code: C944 Transmission Control: Instrument cluster: Heating / AC: Air conditioning / Klimaanlage Fault: Can-terminal status message Code: E714 Fault: CAN-BUS error Code: E704 Immobilizer System: CAS Fault: Central control timeout Code: D904 Fault: CAN bus_off Code: D907 Fault: Signal detection error rate Code: A0B5 Fault: Signal detection error rate Code: A118 Park distance control: Sunroof / Roof: Audio/Navi/Communication: Phone / Telefon ECU OK, no Fault Code Seats: Systems: Fuel pump / Kraftstoffpumpe ECU OK, no Fault Code Car Communication Computer CCC Fault: Communication errors K-CAN Code: E187 Fault: Line fault detection K-CAN Code: E184 Car Communication Computer CCC ECU OK, no Fault Code Anti-theft alarm system: Body: Other: Junction Box Fault: :K-CAN communikation / PT-CAN Controller Code: C908 Fault: :K-CAN communikation / K-CAN communication / K-CAN Controller Code: C907 Fault: :K-Can failure / Terminal status timeout Code: C91E Fault: :PT CAN failure / K-Can failure Code: C914 Another side note since the Fuel pump seems to be finicky with this platform, i called up my local dealership to ask about the recall on the HPFP and they are saying that my vin number isn't covered. I thought there was a 10yr extended warranty on this? Last edited by project jayden; 08-05-2015 at 04:28 PM.. |

FWIW it looks like a bunch of unrelated electronic issues which may mean it is still battery related. Or battery cable (there was a recall), bad ground, something like that.
Just my initial thoughts, if they help in the slightest. |

A couple years ago the relay that controls the radiator fan for the PPk2 went bad on my car and it severely drained the battery. The dash displayed all the symptoms you describe, and the car wouldn't start even though the radio and lights worked fine. I replaced the battery and while everything on the dash went back to normal, I discovered that the fan was running full blast. Once I tested and replaced the relay, the car was fine.
Hopefully it's just your battery and not a electrical short (like I had). And don't trust the little window on the battery. Mine was green when the battery was almost fully drained. |

Pig Farmer thank you for the reply. this might be the issue since I've already replaced the battery and I'm still having the issues. is there an easy way to find out which relay went bad?

Pig Farmer can you please point me the way to where the relays are located? I was trying to find a diagram / location online but couldn't find anything unfortunately and I too am noticing the radiator blowing even on a cold start

On the PPK2 kit, the relay is on a bracket that attaches to the power steering fluid reservoir. It's the little black box with two wires attached to a terminal block on the left side of the photo.

The original fan relay is in the white ECU box located on the passenger side of the engine bay, which is under the black cover in the back. The fan relay is the little black relay on the right side of this photo with white numbers on it. It's hard to make out in the photo, but it looks like it says "99L/0++".

Update: Just in case anyone else is having similar issues (electrical malfunctions and TPMS inactive warning light) Check your RDC module. After checking all my relays and finding out they were good, i checked the RDC and found it submerged in water that had somehow puddled in the trunk. Unplugged it, dried everything off and the past couple of days everything seems back to normal minus the TPMS light since i'm still waiting for the replacement RDC to arrive.

My wife's 328xiT had similar symptoms when the sunroof drains clogged allowed water to soak the tire pressure sensor module.

I haven't replaced mine yet, so I'm running the car without it. Question though: Did your rear parking sensors (if you have them) stop working when you took the module out? Mine did and it's got me a bit worried. Also, where'd you purchase your replacement module from? Last edited by febul; 10-28-2015 at 10:11 AM.. |

I basically took the part number from the RDC box and did a search on ebay. Found it for around $250 shipped. |

Seen that before. Water gets in the connector and messes with the K-CAN bus. After I fixed it, I taped the whole connector and portion of the RDC module in electrical tape to stop it from happening again. Haven't seen the car since.

In my 135i it's located behind the carpet material in the trunk on the passenger's side.
