IPhone 5 and dictation

I just noticed that when you had your iPhone plugged into the USB in your car and push the little microphone button beside the space button the dictation goes through the speaker and microphone of the car.
As you can tell it does not work 100% of the time but useful nonetheless.
I'm currently trying to get the message center in the office of the car to work as we speak

Siri and Dictation work 100% of the time via the car's microphone and speaker as long as the iPhone is connected via bluetooth. It's independent of whether connected via the USB Audio Interface or the Telephone USB Audio Interface.

Text messages also appear on iDrive as long as the iPhone is connected via bluetooth and the notifications option is turned on - which is found when you select your BMW xxxx under devices within bluetooth settings on your iPhone.

Aha! Activating the notifications to "on" in the bluetooth settings of my phone was the part I forgot to do. Although I miss my snap in adaptor, and loss of plugin ability, this new found (to me) feature makes up for it.

Also, has anyone figured out if/how email works with the iPhone? I'm supposed to help a colleague set up texts, and will get extra genius points if I get email to work too.

You have to turn on Alerts and View in Lock Screen for each mail account you have, and also add mail to your notification centre - there's plenty of info on how to set up if you search.

If you are using GMail/Hotmail/iCloud mail, I much prefer to access them via Mobile Office, which is within BMW Online.

I've read most of those help posts, but never got it to work. My mail notifications and view in lock screen are already on. I've tried changing the number of messages to view and recycled the on-off buttons, but no luck.

Yes, unless an update has been released in the last 1/2 year.

Thanks. I hadn't checked for a while. I'm sure it will work now.

Thanks again. I applied the update when I got home, and now email works as well as texts.

How does one go about updating? Is this something you have to pay for?

Sorry if this has been covered before

Here's the only thing I can't make work the way I want it too.

When my i5 is connected through Bluetooth google maps audibly works through the car speakers. As soon as I plug the phone into USB (to charge) then the audible quits working for google maps. Note, if I use the phone to make a call the Bluetooth through car speakers still works regardless of being plugged in or not.

I don't have I-drive.

Normal.

If you optioned "extended Bluetooth connectivity", you can skip plugging in your iPhone via the car's USB slot. Solution is to stream everything via Bluetooth audio, which includes, music, telephone and navigation.

You can still keep your phone charged via the 12v slot.

Bluetooth audio needs to be enabled on your car to allow streaming of music.

Now emails don't work anymore, but texts do. What a pain.

I read on the M5 forum that you have to plug your iphone into the USB, and then "close" the mail app that is running in the background. The first email that came through after this advice, was displayed on idrive. Also, the little envelope icon displayed also.
I still have the most current idrive software as per the www.bmw.com website. Also, I was using an iphone 5 with ios 7.0.

I went to bmw.com/update and downloaded the update file in a USB memory stick but I can't get the idrive to see it. I plugged it in the armrest USB but when I tried to update software, it told me no USB device found. Any idea how to fix this? I just changed from BB to iPhone5s and I can't get any email and that's why I am doing this hoping the update would resolve the issue.

Yes it is. I even used two different USBs to try it. In the Audio it sees the USB just not in the update software😕. Do I need to delete all the files on the USB stick?
