Build date question?

So as I'm still learning about these cars.....what gives with this?

My car is a 2011 128i. Most of the time when I'm buying something, it asks the question if my car had a production date of before 9/10 or after 9/10.

Is there a specific reason for this?

Thanks!

I believe that was the cutoff date for LCI. My Prod: was 09-30-2010 and mine is a 2011 n55 mid-year.

Every September the model year change goes into production. And usually by December small updates like SW or new options go into effect on the production line.

Let's not forget the official LCI year for the 1 series was MY 2012, so that would make the starting year of production in 2011, not 2010.

Changes like the DCT and N55 that started in MY 2011 for the 135i were updates that were not part of the 2012 BMW 1 series LCI (facelift).

That's right. My first 135i was a 2011 MY with an N55 that had a build date of 3/2010, which was quite early. My current 2012 LCI was built December of 2011.

Fixed that for you.

I'm happy with miles, kilometers, fahrenheit, kelvin and celcius but when it comes to date... the world agrees on ISO8601.

... and yes, I make just as many enemies at home with this assertion as I do abroad

What if your car was built on the 15th of September in 2010?

Is that before 9/10 or after 9/10?

sorry, I'm really adding nothing to this thread. It's the end of the day and I'm bored. I'll go away now.

Hahaha, thanks, but I like it the way it was so I fixed it back.

PS - I'm a little bored too.

Then that would really confuse me when ordering parts!

I haven't found any 1-er examples yet, but my '89 E30 includes a few parts only "found" in other model years. Windshield fluid reservoir ("high capacity option" on its order sheet) is found on '90 & later 635's; top cover hinges only "found" on some other later 'verts. There were a few other parts where I got phone calls and detailed conversations to verify the part I ordered was gonna fit my car; in a couple cases they were able to send me a right-er part than I had ordered. So even with the build-date specifics, part houses may have trouble offering the right parts in edge cases.

Mine was built in 08/10. I see that show up quite a bit when ordering stuff, so I was just wondering why.

Thanks for all the replies!

ISO8601 looks about as screwed up as other things out of Europe. I have to work with things with prices in it from our European plant and they always put commas where the period goes and periods where the comas go. Is that some stupid ISO standard too?

When Europe comes up with a standard, it doesn't become the world standard when the good old U. S. of A doesn't agree. Dates are Month, then day, then year. Always been that way and always going to be that way when I write and in my house. Europe can do something else if they want to.

Periods and Commas... that's just the format Europeans use. As opposed to the US format.

5,34 euros... in the US it is written 5.34 euros. Also the date format is day/month/year

distance... 26,4 kilometers in the US would be written 26.4 kilometers or 16.5 miles.

And time... it's not 3:12pm but 15:12

Plus daylight savings time isn't in sync with stateside daylight savings time. In Europe it starts two weeks earlier.

It's easy to ridicule imperial standards - but personal taste is determined very much what you grow up with. I too struggle with European decimals because in Australia we use a comma as a 1,000's separator. So whenever I see 158,31 It looks like someone's tried to write fifteen thousand, eight hundred and thirty one, but put the comma in the wrong spot.

I like ISO8601 because of how well it sorts on computers. Since it goes from least specific to most specific digits, chronological order and Alphabetical order are the same. ... also, because when I say 2019-03-05 no matter where you come from - even if it looks a bit foreign - you know that's the 5th of March. If I say 3/5/19, I see the 3rd of May, you see the 5th of March.

Spreadsheets used to interpret 3/5/19 as 0.03... had to write in routines to scan every entry and convert to date format when the nn/nn/nn format was entered... more "bloat" for the software, but accommodates users' quirks... then we complain it's too slow

I used to figure we'd eventually shorten the second by 14%, and go base-ten for time (100 sec min, 100 min hr, 10 hr day)

My car was built Apr 16 2011 but that might be due to looking it up on an American website

I love looking at this.

My special order, euro delivery 128i was built on my birthday. Thus, I can never sell it.
