Abs light is on
I have an abs light on. Also there is a light with an ! I took it to a luxury car mechanic, he does a lot of bmw work. He told me it was the wheel speed sensor and a tone ring? Said he needed to replace the axle or something? I don’t know. The part has to come from Germany because the aftermarket part didn’t work. Going to cost around $1700 out the door. Does that sound right? Can’t I just replace the wss? I’m ready to get rid of this car.

So the issue is the left rear abs wheel speed sensor and apparently the tone ring that is on the half shaft? Does that make sense? He says you need to replace the half shaft to replace the tone ring? I don’t know. I ordered a wheel speed sensor and we’ll see if that fixes the issue. I guess aftermarket half shafts don’t fit on the 1 series, at least that’s what I was told, so the only solution is to order direct from Germany which means probably a month before I’d get it…

I replaced the left rear abs speed sensor and took a drive. The abs light turned off but the check engine light was still on. It was something to do with the sensor. I figured it was some sort of historic code so I went to harbor freight and bought a code reader, cleared the codes turned the car off took it for a 30+ mile drive and all is good. So far… 🤞🏻

I saw a bunch of youtubes when my car was throwing a ABS code. Then I got a BMW specific code reader (about $100) and found out it was a front sensor. I fixed that and then the other front failed. I ordered rear ones too but they are still working fine. Mine is a 2009.
I wonder if your mechanic has seen the same videos or if his input is from examination of your car. Apparently sometimes the part of the axle the sensor reads can get so rusted up the sensor doesn't work. I'm glad that doesn't seem to be your problem. I've had good luck with parts from Rock Auto. If you need axle shafts after all I'd check there to see what they offer.

All four of my wheel speed sensors failed over time - self-replace for peanuts
I don't wrench but have opposable thumbs and am fairly good with Legos. Did all four sensors in less than an hour. Hardest part was jacking/removing wheels/not tearing up old plastic mounting brackets.

I'm not sure how it is in USA versions of these cars but in Canadian cars the rear wheel speed sensors are built into the wheel bearing. Just changed my right rear wheel bearing wheel I got these warnings on my dash.
