BMW 1M Engine Knock
Something is wrong with my 1M. Yesterday, I noticed a slight rattle sound in 2nd gear at low speed when I got home. I thought it may be a loose heat shield. The oil sensor was recently replaced by BMW. Today, I was driving for about 15 minutes, the BMW reduced engine power notification comes up. I quickly returned home. This car has been out of warranty since May 2015. Luckily I had Geico Mechanical Breakdown which was able to cover charge pipe, clutch, suspension, and oil sensor issues. The coils and spark plugs were replaced around 50k miles. The intake was walnut blasted at VAC Motorsports around the same time. The Geico MB coverage ended in May, because it is limited to 7 years from purchase date. The 1M has just over 71k miles. I searched around. Some people say it's a faulty knock sensor. I have a P3 Gauge, and the codes displayed are as follows:
2DED (This issue has been resolved.) 2E69 3100 2E68 I am going to get it on a flatbed to the BMW Service Center. I would like to do the work myself, but I don't have the time or space. Before I begin the process, does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? Here are some videos: |

They're physical knock sensor electrical issue codes. However that first video sounds like rod knock. I would suggest you drop the oil and check for metal flakes. However if you don't have room/tools I guess just wait for the technician to diagnose it.

That sounds like mechanical damage to me too. I would have it towed(not driven) to a shop. But that sounds like a big repair bill.
Are you tuned? Because all the engine failures I have seen were on tuned cars. Also, have you been changing your engine oil and using a LL-1 rated oil ? good luck, Dackel

i'm so sorry man! As a fellow owner that is the last thing we want to hear!
We can pray for a miracle but I can see the hose moving from each impact. That does not sound good at all. Let us know what you find! Best wishes! |

ugh... I've been there... (not with a 1M.. but an S14 in an E30 M3)
I would recommend an independent BMW mechanic, not the dealer. will be cheaper on your pocketbook and just as good if not better skill and knowledge on older vehicles . Your local dealer's idea of motor repair is Remove and Replace long block. https://www.bimrs.org/ EDIT.. just noticed this previous statement... " The oil sensor was recently replaced by BMW " Can you describe what this is? Oil pressure sensor? oil level sensor? With this previous work.. it may be nest to initially route the vehicle back to the same dealer. See above though if they recommend motor replacement. your clutch has already been replaced at 71K miles? I believe that @1M_Tex has nearly double this mileage on a tuned, heavily track driven and street driven car and the clutch still seems fine. He actually was concerned about his clutch and I drove it on track at an event and it felt just fine. he did have a diverter valve issue that cropped up shortly thereafter.... hopefully you can get it towed to one of the LI dealerships. I would avoid any of the metro NYC dealers.

No updates yet. I'm not really good with responding to message boards in a timely manner. I haven't got a chance to drop the oil pan. Luckily, I have a 2nd car. VAC Motorsports is hosting an open house on the 23rd. I'm going to head over there, and ask about getting it repaired.
The oil level sensor was faulty. I had it repaired at BMW of Westchester at the beginning of May. All mechanical work during my ownership was done there. I bought the car there. I'm the original owner (21/740). I've had bumper damage on the 1M. I had J&B Body Works in Mount Vernon do the repair. I avoid NYC BMW dealerships and service centers. Years ago, I had a 135i with rear end collision damage. I took it to Hassel BMW in LI. The bodywork was completed after about a couple of weeks. A couple of days after I picked it up, my car computer went nuts to the point where it seemed possessed. It had rained heavy the day before. Apparently they didn't use enough sealant during the repair, so water made contact with the computer. So I avoid Hassel BMW as well. |
