rotor scoring
Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on rotor scoring. Mine have looked like this since about 10,000 miles. Currently at 22,000 miles no track time. The left rotor looks more scored than the right one and one of the reasons I am asking is the left wheel has noticeably more brake dust than the right one as in it actually has spots of brake dust that looks like splattered paint versus the right wheel that just has a uniform coating of brake dust. I haven't pulled anything off, but I suspect this is due to dust/gravel embedded in the pad, but wondering if this is just the standard BMW brake pad and rotor wear.
Left: Right: Thanks. Last edited by what have i got into; 07-08-2018 at 08:48 PM.. |

Not normal; not terrible, but not normal. If you've got one side producing more dust than the other you've likely got a caliper issue. Does the car pull under braking? After a normal drive with moderate braking, get out and feel the wheels - is one side noticeably hotter than the other? How long since you changed the brake fluid?

I had a similar issue, albeit no track time. I was going to get around to taking the wheel off and checking it out, but it went away on it's own in a month or so.

Looks normal to me. Just to be safe... after a short drive... touch the alloy wheels with your hand... see IF both wheel(side) are the same temp. IF you want to go high tech... use a IR temp gun... and see what the temps are after some medium braking.

The scoring is minor I agree, but the fact that one side is producing a lot more brake dust than the other is something worth investigating.

Thanks for the input!
Brake fluid was changed just recently (6 months ago by BMW) and produced no change in the dust. The notes didn't say anything about uneven pad wear but just says front pads at 6.5mm thickness and rear brake pads at 8.5mm thickness. The rear rotors have no scoring at all, completely smooth. I like the idea of checking temperature because after the brake fluid change, I had 2 days of warped rotor braking. Basically under decent braking, I would get the shaking steering wheel like the rotors were warped. Which I could see if one caliper was riding the rotor keeping it warm such that under braking it overheated. This went away after a couple of days of driving, but maybe the one caliper has just backed off just enough and the left caliper is still riding the rotor. I'll pull the front wheels this week and see if there's any discernible difference. I can't believe 02Pilot and Dack suggest touching the wheel to see if it's hot... Why not just touch the rotor? Isn't the glowing red rotor the best way to remove fingerprints? Thanks again! Last edited by what have i got into; 07-07-2018 at 08:42 PM.. |

Checked the wheels today for temperature after some hard braking going down a twisty mountain road and NO noticeable difference in temperature. Both were warm but not hot by any means. I also uploaded some pictures to the original post of the brake dust difference between the wheels.
Next step is I am just going to jack it up and pull off wheels, calipers and rotors and see what I can see. |

Could've just been a rock stuck in the pad or some uneven moulding of the pad material causing one little part to abrade more than the others...

I have the same with mine. Mostly the front driver's side has scoring. Both back rotors are smooth and the front passenger side might have some very faint scoring. I do feel a little lumpiness during braking. I have 45k miles. I was planning on just replacing rotors and pads, but I'd hate to see this happen to new rotors. Maybe it's just the stock pads?
