You could, but all of those are lies and outright exaggerations of what a shit car like the Golf is capable of. I mean, do you really want to go down this route? I would drive a Prius before I ever step foot in a VW product..including Audi. Poser cars.

Only a true fanboy can argue against facts I guess. And sorry, I guess I was mistaken about the acceleration figures, they aren't really as similar as I thought, the GTI is around half a second quicker to 60

I assume you are comparing the 27k+ MK7 Golf with PP to a almost 10 year old BMW? Sure. I mean, just because the BMW is bad, doesn't make the Golf good. There aren't enough numbers quantify how shit those cars are.

Not a fan and nothing you say will change that.

Your opinion is fucked up.

Go drive a Mk7 GTI, and come back and tell us about your experience.

with all due respect....acceleration times are just one performance statistic. There is NO GTI that will be as balanced as the E46....sorry to say.

Having driven audi products for 10+ years before getting my first BMW....they are GOOD cars, but not exactly dynamic to drive. People modify them extensively to try to make them dynamic but they aren't engineered as such.

That being said...the GTI is probably the best VW or Audi product around. It won't be as enjoyable as a RWD car....but it's like a halfway point between horribly boring FWD cars like a Camry and enjoyable RWD cars like a 1er.

So where would you put current vintage BMWs, like 3-Series and 2-Series vs. the current GTI? I think I would prefer the GTI, at least as far as driveability.

Why would you spend real car money on a GTI when you could have a 1/2 series - that is what I honestly don't understand.

The GTI, and pretty much all of VW's line up aren't a value in any sense of the word.

Most power? No.
Best handling? No.
Best quality? No.
Best reliability? No.
Best compromise? No.

They do NOTHING better than similar cars in the price range, they honestly don't make a compelling case at all. I'd go as far to say people who buy VWs are just aren't either a. educated (not in an academic sense) or b. just not true enthusiast. These people are the same ones who created this tread afterall:

You're buying a FWD economy car for almost 30K and it's still a turd, it's still a half-baked under-engineered shitbox 'designed' by VWs incompetent engineering team, not to mention for that money there are VASTLY better cars.

And now watch as people flood here to defend these turds "it's got nice soft touch plastics in the interior"

The new Golf R is a better choice for a true car enthusiast than any non-M BMW, and it costs thousands less.

I'll just leave this here...

No it's not. Sorry you haven't heard of the 225/235. I'm not even a BMW fan, and I can tell you that the Golf R is a POS in comparison to most cars, much less a BMW 320i

did you just really say that a Golf R is a POS compared to a 320i? COME ON, man!

The 320i...and the 3-series in general these days is a total joke. Have you driven an F3X generation 3-series? It's no better to drive than a Camry....really. I was equally as unimpressed with the 2-series that i have driven.....soft and wallowy

you can dislike VWs all you want...i kind of do too...but you're stepping into odd territory comparing a mundane applicance like a 320i to a decent performance car like a Golf R.

So the question is will BMW realize that their reputation built up through the years requires a certain critical mass of driving enthusiasts to support (which brings in many of the less demanding luxury car driver segment), or will they abandon the enthusiasts? (note to BMW management; enthusiasts want more than just power and fast acceleration).

My bet is on the latter, but I'd be really pleased to see the former.
