128 vrs 135i is it worth it?

So have owned a 128i for year and honestly really like the car a lot. That said test drove a 135i today and well, it seems like my 128 has more punch at first --- possibly turbo lag? Was not that impressed. Was expecting the 135 to jump off the line like my wife's Mini Cooper S...... .. not so much. I'm not an experienced turbo/ supercharger guy so please explain - is the 135 really that much better?

First post and already starting crap about 135i vs 128i. It's not a battle where one has to win. Buy what suits your needs and be happy with it.

Oh and since you drove both the cars yourself and found the 128i to be good enough, why would others telling you about the 135i, make it any better or worse?

Different cars with different driving characteristics. I enjoy my 135i more for daily driving, lots of time spent on the freeway and cruising. However I prefer the linear power and early torque of the n52 on track. I just wish the n52 didn't lose so much steam on the top end. Both are great motors.

Thanks for your perspective - just trying to understand the difference. Honestly don't have a lot of experience with turbo so thought maybe the particular car I drove was off. Reading from your post and what you describe sounds like what I experienced, and what I am use to is the linear response of the n52 engine?

Once the 135 spooled up I certainly noticed the difference in power over my 128 -

Thanks again your answer helps

What you are referring to is throttle response, which is a characteristic NA engines are known for unlike their turbo counterparts. 128i certainly isn't faster.

Better get used to the 135i guys dumping on you and not taking you seriously.

Personally, I think the 128i is perfect.

The 135i you drove you had problems if you really thought your 128 had more punch - no lag on my 135i and a LOT more punch than the 128i I drove prior to buying it.

If you can't tell the difference, by all means stay with the 128i and save yourself the money. There's not practical advantage to a 135i.

Matter of taste, nothing more. Not some global "quality". One is not "better" than the other.

If the OP is serious I'd ask him why he's concerned about others tastes in cars, rather than his own. What car you drive is a personal decision, not a vote.

I drove both, bought the 128. Not really a cost or reliability thing, its power/handling balance suited me. The 135 was a hoot, but the power was not a big deal for me. For many years my power deal has been on two wheels, and bikes make most any car seem less than powerful.

As mentioned in my original post I don't have experience with turbos so was interested in whether the car I drove might have not have been performing properly - figured folks here would know and share their insights

It's a matter of personal taste. I love my car, wouldn't trade it for anything.

The N54 makes 300 ft lbs at 1400rpm(the N55 a shade lower)Nowhere in the powerband does the N52 surpass either turbo engine in hp or tq. the 135 also sprints to 60mph in under 5 seconds, most would call that 'punch'. Turbo lag has been called minuscule by every professional review out there, almost un perceivable. I guess if you didn't touch the throttle and slowly let out the clutch you could have experienced what you say you did or the car was seriously damaged in some way.
